We always get requests of stress crack removal, this is pretty common amongst older homes. Homes in MN. But, this has become a bigger issue within new build homes as well.
As we get fluctuation from cold to warm weather, it causes movement within the walls and foundation of your home. As your home settles, especially newer homes, there will be more movement in the substrate within which the foundation is settling.
There's multiple reasons these common issues will occur. I'm only stating, some of the obvious issues that can cause these problems within your home.
When it comes to fixing these areas, there are a couple of ways to go about it.
1. Cut all the way through the drywall in the shape of a "V". This will help the crack hold mud better.
2. Cut the drywall out in that area. Which is beneficial in areas where you have a stress point, hence stress crack. This will relieve pressure within that specific area.
Again, I will say this lighthearted. Sometimes doing it on your own is not the best way to get great results. These patches need to be spread evenly (with mud 2-3x the size of the original area). I've seen some fixes that look really bad.
Have you ever walked by a patch and it looks like a ball in the wall or textures don't match very well?
God Bless!
