The Amherst Wood Artisan

The Amherst Wood Artisan The Amherst Wood Artisan is a small custom woodworking shop specializing in custom furniture, built- I think both are reflected in my work.

I started my small shop shortly after being laid off from an engineering cube farm. I had been looking for something and I've always been good with my hands. I started woodworking as a hobby just a few years earlier and decided to give it a try. I've been building my skills and techniques as I go and know that I still have so much more to learn. I'm meticulous by nature and details are very important to me.

Garden Bench Engraving.

Forman3D crushed it yet again. Not only is the engraving super crisp on this Sapele, they also took a high res picture of our late dog Zion's paw print and turned it into the engraving you see here. It means a lot to me that they went above and beyond to make this happen.

Going 3D.

All the corners got miter locked and now it really starts to look like something. I still need to build the face frame for the little cabinet, that gets miter locked in as well. In the meantime, I can start to assemble these as I tackle that.

Some call it a miter lock. Others a locking miter.

Either way, always worth it to me. It can be tricky to set up, but like anything the more you do it the better you get at it. The look and easy of assembly just can't be beat in my mind.

Dry fit.

I couldn't wait to get a feel for the scale once I got all the rails and stiles cut. Its one thing on a piece of paper. Its another in CAD. Buts it's something totally different once you can touch it. There is still some joinery to cut (locking miters), and some final trimming, but I'm really pleased with the proportions here.

Sticks are stuck.

The main profile cut of a frame assembly is often called the stick or sticking. It consists of the profile and the groove for the panel and cope to sit in.

Wood•Machinist.

I was aiming for around 3 inches for this center rail. I'll probably be able to live with that. Making it even sweeter, this was the first try on a test piece.

📐 Square 📐.

This is the last cope cut. Still perfectly square, no drift. I'm really happy with how square these cuts and copes came out. I'm normally not this pleased with how square something is, so you'll just have to trust me no trickery here, just really, truly square.

Coped.

The cope cut on a cabinet door is a mating cut that matches the profile of the cabinetry. It makes for a stronger door as it acts like a mini-mortise and tenon. In this case the profile is a simple 15° bevel, a sort of modern take on a tradition shaker door.

Labor of Love.

It's a real labor of love keeping track of 78 matched parts. I think it'll be well worth it. Only 28 rails shown, getting ready for that cope cut.
