Custom Chair Cane Weaving

Custom Chair Cane Weaving Lawrence F. Mavis has over 50 years of experience in restoring your family heirlooms. Dad has been caning chairs for as long as my brother and I can remember.

He learned from a relative in 1969 which puts him at over 50 years of chair caning experience. He specializes in a selection of weaves including the Octagon Weave, Herringbone Weave, Rush Weave, and also offers Pressed Cane. The rush weave is my personal favorite but he'll tell you it's by far his least favorite weave to do, as well as the most time consuming and most expensive. It's all tedious a

nd time consuming work but it suits him well. In the 1980's our parents attended a Star Trek convention where John de Lancie, known for his role as Q, spoke words of wisdom that dad still quotes to this day (among other Star Trek quotes, ha). John de Lancie said "Don't get a job, get a career and when you get good at it people will come to you." And it's true, Dad's side business has continued after all these years because people keep coming. He advertises his business with a simple paper business card and nothing else aside from occasionally demonstrating in the NW Ohio area including the Grand Rapids Apple Butter Festival most Octobers. Word of mouth does the rest! I created this page to not only document and share his day-to-day work but to also share his newly available Seat Weaving Kits. Lawrence has personally designed and built a unique Beginner's Seat Weaving Kit suitable for anyone and everyone with a hands-on interest in learning the lost art of seat weaving! Of course, they also make great gifts. If you have a family heirloom in the attic waiting to be restored or would like to order a Beginner's Seat Weaving Kit, give Lawrence a call, he'll be happy to assist you!

Custom Chair Cane Weaving will be set up right across from the big copper kettles of apple butter on Apple Butter Fest Day!! πŸ˜‹

🍎🍎 15 DAYS 🍎🍎

It all starts with the applebutter... and today, in preparation of the 46th Annual Grand Rapids Applebutter Fest, we’re stirring and canning nearly 2,000 pints of apple butter at The Big Stir…sweet, perfectly spiced, and a tasty addition to toast, crackers or even a pork chop.

We’ll gather again for a peeling on October 4th - bushel upon bushel cored, peeled, trimmed, and cut to be ready for cooking on Fest Day the old fashioned way… in big copper kettles over a fire right in the heart of Downtown Grand Rapids Ohio. By the time the fest is over, we will have canned 3,000 jars of this delectable delight that has brought people out to the Fest for 46 years.

Historically, entire communities of families and neighbors, young and old, came together in the fall to preserve part of the apple crop by making apple butter. This tradition continues at our Fest, where copper kettles are set up over log fires in Village Park adjacent to the Town Hall. Volunteers stir the apple butter with a wooden paddle. You, too, can experience the camaraderie, as neighbors did in times past. All are welcome to take a turn stirring the apple butter. Free apple cider is available during the stirring.

Mark your calendars now to come and join the fun in Downtown Grand Rapids Ohio and enjoy the 46th Annual Grand Rapids Applebutter Fest, one of Ohio. Find It Here.'s Top Five Applebutter Festivals, on Sunday, October 8 from 10am - 5pm (although the die-hards are here much earlier than that!).

Well folks, I thought it would be wise to catch up on posting some photos before the Apple Butter Festival in a couple weeks! As usual, Dad will be demonstrating chair caning there and you KNOW I'll be taking a ton of pictures. Mom and dad will be out there bright and early setting up their booth so be sure to stop by and say hi to them! 😁 For now, you can admire these lovely chairs that have been given new life. Unfortunately, I don't have completed photos of all of them but I like to share the unfinished ones anyway because each chair is so unique. πŸ’› Feel free to share any photos you have that I don't. Dad needs some ratings here on his page so please rate Lawrence if he's done work for you! 🍁 Happy Fall! πŸ‚ See you at the Apple Butter Festival!🍎

As a kid, I knew not to expect all chair pick ups to be a quick thing. But what was there so much for the adults to talk about? I've learned that often it's the history behind the chair that starts the conversation. Not just a "How about this weather?" conversation but a true personal interaction and it just evolves from there. Last week I was at my parents house snapping photos of some chairs that were all fixed up and ready to go and I got to meet a super nice couple that came to pick up their patio chairs. Over half an hour and a hug later, they walked out of my parent's kitchen and I don't think we'll ever forget them. It was just really nice meeting them and I'm glad I got to experience that as an adult. πŸ™‚
