He learned from a relative in 1969 which puts him at over 50 years of chair caning experience. He specializes in a selection of weaves including the Octagon Weave, Herringbone Weave, Rush Weave, and also offers Pressed Cane. The rush weave is my personal favorite but he'll tell you it's by far his least favorite weave to do, as well as the most time consuming and most expensive. It's all tedious a
nd time consuming work but it suits him well. In the 1980's our parents attended a Star Trek convention where John de Lancie, known for his role as Q, spoke words of wisdom that dad still quotes to this day (among other Star Trek quotes, ha). John de Lancie said "Don't get a job, get a career and when you get good at it people will come to you." And it's true, Dad's side business has continued after all these years because people keep coming. He advertises his business with a simple paper business card and nothing else aside from occasionally demonstrating in the NW Ohio area including the Grand Rapids Apple Butter Festival most Octobers. Word of mouth does the rest! I created this page to not only document and share his day-to-day work but to also share his newly available Seat Weaving Kits. Lawrence has personally designed and built a unique Beginner's Seat Weaving Kit suitable for anyone and everyone with a hands-on interest in learning the lost art of seat weaving! Of course, they also make great gifts. If you have a family heirloom in the attic waiting to be restored or would like to order a Beginner's Seat Weaving Kit, give Lawrence a call, he'll be happy to assist you!
