Due to the recent dry weather, the fire danger for our area is elevated. Please contact your local fire agency for burning restrictions.

Fire Danger Level: HIGH
When the fire danger is "High," fires can start easily from most causes, and small fuels (such as grasses and needles) will ignite readily. Unattended campfires and brush fires are likely to escape. Fires will spread easily, with some areas of high-intensity burning on slopes or concentrated fuels. Fires can become serious and difficult to control unless they are put out while they are still small.

Fire Danger Level: VERY HIGH
When the fire danger is "Very High," fires will start easily from most causes. The fires will spread rapidly and have a quick increase in intensity, right after ignition. Small fires can quickly become large fires and exhibit extreme fire intensity, such as long-distance spotting and fire whirls. These fires can be difficult to control and will often become much larger and longer-lasting fires.

RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a Red Flag Warning, which is in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening.

* Winds: West 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Relative Humidity: As low as 25 percent.

* Temperatures: In the mid 70s.

* Impacts: Burn restrictions are likely in effect. For more information on burn restrictions...visit the Michigan DNR website at www.michigan.gov/burnpermit or call 866-922-2876.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Be careful with any activities that could potentially lead to a wildfire. Camping, outdoor grills, smoking materials, chain saws, and all terrain vehicles all have the potential to throw a
spark and ignite a dangerous and destructive fire.

It's Rural Road Safety Awareness Week. Summer storms can often drop heavy rains quickly, causing flooding on rural roads. NEVER drive through flooded roadways because you do not know the condition of the road under the water. If a road is flooded, turn around and find an alternate route.
