Wellbeing impacts how we show up for everything in our lives. Yet when it comes to the workplace, only 58% of employees rate their mental wellbeing as good or excellent. So how can an office space support employee wellbeing?

MillerKnoll breaks down how factors like biophilic design, ergonomics, and a sense of belonging can create positive experiences in “Why wellbeing matters.”

“Sustainability—did we think about it much? We did, with the expectation that it had to do with longevity,” says designer Don Chadwick of the original Herman Miller Aeron Chair, which debuted in 1994—long before sustainability was as top-of-mind as it is now.

Today, Herman Miller has reengineered the chair with ocean-bound plastic, which will aim to divert 150 metric tons from the ocean every year. And like all our products, Aeron is designed to last. “A lot of people would say, how can you spend $1,000 on a desk chair?” Chadwick says. “But if you amortize that over the life of the chair, 20 years—I mean, I have one that’s from 1995.”

When the Aeron Chair debuted in 1994, its most obvious differentiator was its Pellicle, the first-of-its-kind elastomeric suspension used in lieu of traditional foam and fabric. Designers Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf worked with Herman Miller engineers on multiple iterations of the material weave until it both physically and functionally worked. From there, they collaborated with another local company that had come up with a whole new technological process for molding fabric to plastic called encapsulation. The results helped lead to the most innovative office chair in history.

As we celebrate the reengineered Herman Miller Aeron, now with ocean-bound plastic, they sat down to talk all things Aeron—and a half century’s worth of work—with the industrial design legend Don Chadwick.

Long before Don Chadwick designed the Aeron Chair with Bill Stumpf, postwar Los Angeles influenced his interest in material innovation, just as the design world at large shifted in the post-war technological boom. As Chadwick pointed out in a chat with WHY Magazine, George Nelson’s bubble lamps resulted from a warship technology called mothballing and the Eames fiberglass shell stemmed from an encounter Ray and Charles had with a plastics company making fiberglass parts for the aerospace industry. Even the concept of ergonomics was a study first applied to military pilots.

Herman Miller sat down with the industrial design legend to talk about where the industry has been, and where it’s going.

Hear from industrial design legend Don Chadwick as he reflects on a 50-year career, which included breaking all the rules with Aeron Chair co-designer Bill Stumpf, as we launch our newly re-engineered Aeron, now made with ocean-bound plastic.

Our Story

Explorers explore. It’s what they do. They have a vision, then set out to accomplish it. Their daring is what sets them apart — they muster the drive and courage to see it through. At APG, we believe in better. We see beyond the now, redefine what’s possible, then do what it takes to make it a reality. Because we believe that vision is what separates good enough from great. And our sights are on great.

Our Roots Run Deep

Our founders built APG on a dream that they could improve the lives of office workers. By providing engaging workspaces for users and flexible solutions for employers, they built a foundation on which we stand today.

Tom Alexander and Chuck Patterson began APG Office Furnishings in Cincinnati, Ohio, bringing revolutionary Herman Miller office solutions to the tri-state region. Within a few short years, they had secured contracts with major corporations across southwest Ohio.
