“Our design aesthetic and approach to design and architecture projects is based on the notion of listening and to question, to research, to challenge, to respond with the process of design as a quest to improve the quality of life for all who are involved. To answer not just the material needs but the spiritual - to bring some joy, beauty, light and nature into our lives - to lift the spirits.

When we started to think about what type of furniture could best fit in the spaces created in a home, we realised that there was no single specific collection in existence that could be used for the different uses in different rooms, so I decided to develop a bespoke family of furniture.”

電車で約1時間、コペンハーゲンの郊外へ。駅から車で15分ほどすると、だんだん視界が空と緑のみで埋め尽くされていったその先に、ひっそりと佇む一軒家。夫婦2人で暮らすこの家が、Jensさんが手がけた環境建築住宅だ。90パーセントが天然資源由来の建材で、シンプルな構造で修繕もしやすい。そして一般住宅と比べてCO2の排出の大幅な削減を実現させたこの住宅は、現代における革新的な建築として注目を浴びている。そして外装、内装デザインはともに、日本から大きな影響を受けているのだそう。

「縁側や障子、踏み石など、日本の建築やデザインのアプローチに多大な影響を受けており、実際の建築にも採用しています。デンマークの家は大きく、暮らす家族が増えるほどにただ広くなり、部屋が増えていきますが、日本の住宅は狭いながらもその小さなスペースを活かすためのさまざまな機能に重点が置かれています。スペースが広いと同じ家にいても家族の間に距離が生まれますが、小さいとお互いを気遣い尊重する心が生まれる。そしてその限られたスペースを活かすための解決策を見つけるために、より創造的になる。私はそんな暮らし方を日本の建築から学び、それを自分の建築でも実現したいと思ったのです。例えば日本のふすまに代表される引き戸もそのひとつ。押し戸よりも省スペースで、部屋と部屋を完全に仕切らずにつながりを持たせられるという機能がある。そんなふうに、小さいスペースで一緒に居心地良く暮らすことをこの家では重視しました」

Fence is a high-back-sofa, a typology that has successfully conquered design driven office- and hospitality spaces. Its design takes an unexpected approach, inspired by industrial pallets: A wooden structure with elaborate details frame the bold volumes of the upholstery. The firm but comfortable seat is enclosed by padded walls with an elastic core. The sofa provides privacy for informal one-to-one meetings and concentrated working alone. With it’s calm appearance and beautifully finished back side, it almost becomes an architectural element in the interior and allows to separate and structure large spaces. The fabrics for the upholstery can be selected from a selection of standard fabrics or can be customised. The wooden frame comes in a black or natural finish.

Posted • The new Polar Sofa by is a further development of the Polar Lounge Chair and uses the same minimalistic design language: clear, round and soft shapes are combined with geometric elements. The Polar Sofa is designed for contract use and can be used in a variety of private and public settings, from lobbies and co-working spaces to living rooms. In addition to the standard KNS fabrics, the sofa is available in the special fabric Kvadrat Febrik Uniform Mélange, offering a unique soft look and feel. The legs are in solid, sustainably sourced Japanese oak.

All KNS novelties are now part of the permanent KNS collection, can be ordered from now on and are on display at the Karimoku Commons Tokyo showroom.
