A DNA profiling reference database of bigleaf maple was developed and used in this case, the only database of its kind that has been validated for use in court proceedings.

Read more about how we used the database to match seized bigleaf maple wood blocks to stumps from suspected theft sites using DNA profiling, which was developed in collaboration with World Resources Institute and The University of Adelaide.

This also marks the first time the US government has prosecuted a Lacey Act case for illegal interstate trade of wood products within the US - a win for forests both domestic and international.

The theft of bigleaf maple to feed the demand for rare tonewoods used by musical instrument makers has been a persistent problem in the U.S. Pacific Northwest for years, but now law enforcement officials say they’ve brought a ring of illegal loggers to justice — and used DNA evidence to convict them…
