Armchair decorated with Western-style carvings ~
Qianlong reign (1736-1795) Qing dynasty (1644-1911).

The chair headrest is sumptuously carved in the Baroque style. The back panel is carved into the shape of a vase. The frame of the chair back and the armrests are both designed in Western styles. The cabriole legs have eagle-claw-shaped feet, which rest on little balls linking the foot stretcher. Of historic and artistic value, the chair incorporates Western styles in terms of its overall form and decorative patterns, which mirror the Cantonese furniture style in the Qing dynasty.

【长物志】卷六‘几塌’篇云; ‘短塌高尺许,长四尺,置于佛堂,书斋,可以习静坐禅,谈玄挥尘,更便斜倚,俗名弥勒塌’。这件被民间称之为‘弥勒塌‘罐大理石的小塌,塌后背围屏三屏连体,两侧扶手各一屏,罐大理石,天然纹理如远山出岫,意境悠远自然,为全器稍添了多一份赏处。中屏规格大,两侧屏框的底边前角外接站牙,不仅起到装饰效果,也增添了扶手牢固性。面框边沿起洼面,上下起捏角线。高束腰,立矮柱,罐炮仗筒开光板。平面起阳线堆肚。矮柱起洼面,起捏角线。叠刹起碗口线。此塌的最大特点是鼓腿抛牙,由于腿足取斜立45度,彭出大弯,婉转而富有弹性。脚头作卷珠式踩扁珠。腿脚起捏脚线,两弯边与 ‘罗汉肚’抛牙贯通阳线,扁珠落在外围施予大倒棱方托泥上,下置蜻蜓小足。 这是一件工巧,大气的精品,它使我们看到了嘉道年间‘苏作’的卓越水平。

Fan-shaped Southern Official's Hat armchair (Quarter set)
The splay of the legs is very marked. The front seat stretcher is wider than the back seat stretcher, whose convex circular segment gives the seat the form of a fan. The only carving is a peony on the splat, carved in the early Ming lacquerware style. The apron is heavily beaded and dips downward in the center and on all three sides. An exposed tenon can be seen on the leg stretcher, protruding slightly to strengthen the chair. This rare feature in Ming furniture resembles the architectural workmanship of a bygone era. The size, design, and molding combine to give this chair an air of concentrated and solid dignity. But its crucial characteristics are the open structure, the stable spatial arrangement, and the erect, splayed legs.

原物；清 – 清宫旧藏 - 螭纹扶手椅
此椅为三围屏式,双面做,雕饰精美螭纹,靠背中心阴刻正龙纹。椅面平镶攒框而作,面框做冰盘沿,椅盘下做束腰,整体层次分明。牙角装饰透雕凤纹,方腿内侧边缘起阳线,安管脚枨,内翻回纹马蹄。 此器最为吸睛的莫过于靠背跟两侧扶手复杂的工艺流程,两面做透雕纹样尤为精细雅,因大面积雕饰看起来富贵雍容,足以使人产生一种浮想联翩之感。雕刻方面采用通雕,浮雕,圆雕,镂空线刻等多种工艺混合. 还有多种多样的工艺,包括原坯拓样,纹样粗凿,轮廊修饰,精工铲雕,修磨处理等程序,需要复杂的工序和悟性,才能把雕刻变得立体,有灵性。

Unlike standard footrests, footstools with rollers were meant to be therapeutic. Even in today's living environment, tile floors could be cold and damp, and by moving the feet back and forth over the rollers, circulation was improved, and the lower extremities warmed. The Ming connoisseur Wen Zhengheng praised the stimulating effects of foot rollers in his Treatise on Superfluous Things (Zhang Wu Zhi): “Moving the feet back and forth over the rollers excites the vital energies (jing qi) to bubble upward like a fountain. This Ming-style, rectangular foot roller has a standard waist frame with four oval-shaped moving rollers divided by a central rail hidden tenoned into the long rails. Constructed of typical mitred, mortise-and-tenon frame construction, the outside edge of the frame is gently convex in section. The legs are double-lock mortise-and-tenoned into the underside of the frame and mitred and half-lapped to the waist and apron, which has a raised bead to the lower edge....
