ateliercetrei

ateliercetrei ateliercetrei is a partnership practicing design, interior architecture, architecture and urban planning.

ateliercetrei, written in one word in lowercase letters, is a partnership practicing architecture, interior architecture, design, urban planning and cultural analysis trying to bring together academia, design research and professional practice. The one word stands for unity, while the lowercase letters are meant to offer a nod to the Bauhaus notion of a non-hierarchical language, reinforcing our e

thos of democratic partnership. The practice is led by two partners in charge of the different ongoing projects: Anamaria Moldovan and Paul-Mihai Moldovan. Our work [products, spaces and theories] is meant to help improve the quality of its [end]users' life and is characterized by its high project quality. We are developing our projects from the early sketches to on-site supervision. We are used to applying the same attention to details from a small furniture project to an urban one. In this approach we see ourselves as our clients partners, rather then their consultants. We believe in a collaborative work process done by teams that have the clients as part of them. Such a work process defines the best possible solutions that none of the team members could have conceived of initially or individually.

One of the four houses in the landscape.
One of the rooms within it.

L1 settles lightly on the slope, opening towards the forest and distant clearings. From the outside, the gesture is almost silent: a familiar silhouette, slightly lifted, carefully placed.

Inside S1, the scale shifts.
Architecture becomes tactile - wood, light, thickness, proximity. A place measured not in meters, but in comfort.

Across the ensemble, the project moves between these two conditions: distance and closeness, landscape and interior, memory and use.

A new step for a mountain hospitality project in Rusu, near Petroșani: the building permit has been obtained, following the feasibility study phase.

From the outset, the project explores how a contemporary volume can engage the mountain landscape while referencing the archaic vernacular at the intersection of Gorj, Hunedoara and Țara Loviștei.

The linear logic of the traditional house - porch and repeated room module - is reinterpreted through an entrance loggia and a sequence of structural bays organizing the accommodation units.

In the rather chaotic context of the Rusu resort, the project proposes a calm, restrained presence, defined by simple volumes and a reduced material palette.

If you tried calling, emailing, or knocking and didn’t get an answer - don’t worry. We’re on our annual winter break until January 12, embracing family time, quiet days, snowy mornings (maybe), and a slower rhythm as the year comes to an end.
In the meantime, we hope you’re enjoying the holidays, whether in your favorite winter getaway or in the warmth of your own home.
We’re leaving you with some images of the four Ielele refurbished and resettled houses, captured by (a couple of them enhanced with AI for holiday-related purposes), in one of the most picturesque settings of the Apuseni Mountains: Smida.

Merry Christmas, and see you in the New Year.
Until then - warm thoughts and peaceful days.

We’re delighted that our project “Plissé Pedestal” has been nominated in the Temporary Architecture and Object Design category at the Transylvania Architecture Biennale .2025.

The Plissé Pedestal consists of two elegantly integrated elements: the pleated tabletop designed to showcase the cups, and its base equipped with three storage compartments - a dialogue between display and utility. For us, the design journey has been about folding space, form and function into one refined object.

Our gratitude goes first to .ceramics for the opportunity and trust, to our team, to our collaborators .lignum and .tact , to for the outstanding outfits, and to .studio for the beautiful photographs capturing the project’s spirit.

We are proud that the story of Plissé continues.

On Saturday, October 25th, during the Awards Gala of .2025, our project for the “Restoration, refurbishment and integration into the touristic circuit of the Fort of the 5th Roman Legion - Macedonica, Potaissa–Turda” received a new distinction - nomination in the 5th category of the Transylvania Architecture Biennale: Restoration and Revitalization of Cultural Heritage.
The Roman fort at Potaissa is an essential part of the city’s identity - a place with a unique energy. For us, the opportunity to contribute to its (re)discovery and revitalization has been a true journey through time, memory, and place.
Our gratitude goes out to the organizers of the biennale, to the jury members, our client, collaborators, and last but not least, to , for the photographs that capture the essence of our project.

“[…] it is presenting an archaeological site, pairing the ancient Roman ruins with contemporary structures. The site is enhanced with minimal invasion, to respect the integrity of the ruins. It is now adapted to welcome visitors and will surely be an important addition to the region’s touristic map, while providing important levels of awareness. The design of the new structures is simple and elegant. It gives the visitor a sense of space, and allows to better experience the site. […]” Omniya Abdel Barr, jury member

We are grateful that the story of Potaissa continues.

Last week, our own and had the pleasure of presenting, together with and architect , Senior Program Manager at , the foundations of the design brief for the adaptive reuse of the former Fabric Synagogue complex.

The event took place at Cinema Studio in Timișoara, in the presence of representatives of the Jewish community, the local community, and the press.

The complex includes the former synagogue, the house of worship, and the courtyard in between. Our vision for its future proposes:
• Educational hub hosting workshops, exhibitions, and conferences
• Cultural and social space, open to the Fabric community and beyond;
• Café & courtyard for outdoor events;
• Memorial space, honoring the significant contribution of the Jewish community to the Fabric district and to Timișoara as a whole.

The design brief was shaped through three layers:
•Five participatory design workshops
•Nine foundation studies
•Ten case studies
The results of these layers were overlapped and interpreted to define the final direction.

We are honored to collaborate with and World Monuments Fund to return this site of historic and cultural value to the heart of its community.

Building permit approved for ARG House!
We’re excited to celebrate this milestone for a project that’s close to our hearts — developed in collaboration with our talented friends at .creativa.

ARG House explores new ground for us: it will be built using hempcrete blocks and a glued-laminated timber frame, reimagining the traditional Transylvanian barn with contemporary tools and materials. We’ve learned so much through this process and can’t wait to see it come to life!

Over the past few days, Timișoara has opened its doors to us through four workshops that laid the foundation for the design brief of the adaptive reuse project of the former Fabric Synagogue Complex. We spent three days immersed in meaningful presentations, engaging interactions, open dialogue and valuable connections — all of which will shape the future of the former .
We’re deeply grateful for the partnership with the Municipality of Timișoara – – and the World Monuments Fund – – without whom these workshops would not have been possible. We also extend our thanks to for hosting us at Palatul Ștefania.
Each workshop, focused on different target groups, followed a four-part structure: a site walk and meeting at the synagogue, presentations by the team and collaborators, participant questionnaires, and open discussions with nearly 100 participants.
From these rich exchanges, a series of specific needs and narrative threads emerged. These, together with insights from our ongoing studies, will be woven into a long-lasting story — one that will reconnect the former Synagogue Complex with the community and reestablish it as a vibrant focal point for the future of the Fabric neighborhood and the city of Timișoara.
We’d like to warmly thank Maja Bâldea and Gabriela Domokos-Pașcu for their in-depth presentation on the historical evolution of the Synagogue Complex and its role in the development of Fabric. A special thank you goes to the Art History Construct team, dedicated to safeguarding this listed monument.
Last but not least, we are truly grateful to the people of Timișoara who contributed to the Memory Archive of the Former Synagogue in Fabric.

Timișoara, you have been good to us.
Thank you!

We’ve been hard at work since the beginning of the year laying the groundwork for the design brief of the adaptive reuse project for the former Fabric Synagogue Complex in Timișoara, Romania. This is a participatory design process that will continue through most of 2025, in partnership with the Municipality of Timișoara () and the World Monuments Fund (). The latter has included the former Fabric Synagogue on the World Monuments Watch — their prestigious, biennial, nomination-based advocacy program.
With that in mind, we’ll be in Timișoara starting Friday, May 9, to host four participatory workshops in collaboration with the Municipality of Timișoara and Centrul de Proiecte Timișoara (). The sessions will run Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and all day Monday. We’re looking forward to meeting representatives from the local adminstration, community members, NGOs, and professionals in the cultural and educational sectors to discuss the future of the Fabric Synagogue Complex.
If you’re in the neighborhood, feel free to stop by and say hello at Palatul Ștefania! For a detailed schedule, swipe left or visit the official websites of the Municipality of Timișoara and Centrul de Proiecte Timișoara.

Festival for Schools of Architecture of Tomorrow was a blast! Activations, exhibitions, talks and no more than three nights of keynote addresses at the Romanian National Opera of Cluj-Napoca, inaugurated in 1920 and designed by the famous Austrian duo, Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. While part of the team of the host school of architecture , was charged, last minute, with changing the set design for the most anticipated talk of the festival, the conversation between Peter Zumthor and Liliana Ursu. As such, a set of MaNoOtTa’s - complete with cork trays, designed by yours truly and produced by , was paired with two amazing Archibald armchairs designed by Jean-Marie Massaud and produced by , courtesy of our friends from , as well as a Arco floor lamp designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni from Paul’s personal collection. It was a real pleasure to see our own MaNoOtTa in such good company in this amazing place, rich in history and filled with students, tutors, academics and architecture enthusiasts.
Needless to say that post-event we gifted Mr Zumthor a MaNoOtTa cork tray while he was as courteous as to sign one of the two MaNoOtTa that took stage during his conversation with Mrs Liliana Ursu. Swipe left to see more pics from the talk as well as from behind the scenes.
