Due to living areas getting smaller, even compact at times, we observe the rebirth of multifunctional furniture. Henryków's biedermeiers are no different, especially sofa beds, which can be used as sofas, but also give the possibility to act as a bed for additional people; similar to draw-leaf tables with one or two leaves that are usually used as small desks - after extending they can transform into classic dining tables for 6-8 people.

New upholstery - a new life of furniture.

Fabrics, similar to colours, are influenced by trends and fashion. That is why, more and more often, we happen to receive furniture that is fully efficient, manufactured at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, whose only faults are their fabrics that are not fashionable anymore. The right choice and change of upholstery can give this furniture a new life. This time, in order to refresh the look of this English-style living room furniture, we used the one-colour Fargotex fabrics from the GLAM VELVET collection.

A recently renovated tabletop of an over 100-years-old table, made from pinewood boards in an oak veneer.

The countertop was treated with a smoothing calibration aimed to remove over 4 millimetres of height differences from the top of it.

Next, the double-smoothed tabletop was glued with a "blint" (a hidden veneer) in order to stabilise the wood work, and a decorative veneer folded in an envelope style.

The whole has been secured with a clear lacquer in the open pore technique.

When a few years ago I first heard about a weekend course for people wanting to restore their furniture by themselves, I thought this was a dark joke. What wouldn't we do for money, though? Besides, there will always be someone ready to pay in order to keep the belief in their strengths and skills, or lack of thereof. The effects of such quasi-courses include unique Louis XV pieces covered in white paint in order to get the Shabby Chic effect, and other less unique Biedermeiers or Simmlers, that can in no way now be restored back to their former glory. Let these photos, that show the real repairs of a destroyed countertop, make the weekend renovators aware what they will have to face.

A beautiful, classicistic desk is looking for a new home!

Made from oak wood and veneer, it is the perfect example of the carpentry art from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The old lacquer layers are initially sanded off, and the desktop is ready for leather gluing.

A reproduction dresser in the Louis XV style, decorated with the Santos and Cocobolo rosewood veneers, manufactured in the 70s in Henryków. All the carpentry faults have been fixed, a new lacquer layer in polished gloss applied, and the missing brass fittings have been added as well, which had been chiseled and hammered beforehand. The fittings can be gilded with 24k gold. All the work has been done maintaining the piece's primary style and functionality.

Vanities are an essential piece of furniture in bathrooms and one of the first places that we head to in the morning - so it is important to think about how they should look and feel. The most unique spaces are the ones that cannot be pinned to a specific style, but are a blend of different ones. Mixing old and new is a great way to create a timeless interior and to incorporate meaningful, loved pieces with the comfort of the modern ones, and make it look like it has evolved over many years. Fresh upholstery can give older furniture a modern feel without sacrificing their charm. The piece in the picture is the purest form of the Biedermeier, a renovated Hamburg armchair.
