I’M A PLUMBER, WHY DO I NEED A WEBSITE?
Throughout my sales career I’ve spoken to numerous types of people and dealt with numerous types of businesses. Whatever it is I’m selling, and whoever it is to the same rule applies – find a requirement, and fit a solution to it. The way I see it, why bother trying to sell ice to eskimoes? I’d rather try it with the chap in the desert!
When selling websites you’d think the same rule applies. So when I got asked by a self employed plumber ‘what do I need a website for?’ he kind of stopped me in my tracks. His view was there’s no need for you to have a website if that industry doesn’t demand it, and I speak to so many people that believe this. Take the plumber for instance – they probably get the bulk of their business through referrals and reputation in much the same way as a lot of their competitors, and at some point I’m sure all will ask do I really need a website. So I nearly put the phone down and moved on… until I started thinking, does this guy really need a website?
Absolutely. No question, without a doubt yes he does! If you have a business you should always have a website.
So many business owners are quick to presume that they don’t need a website because their product can’t be sold online. Are you sure about this? These days, there isn’t much that can’t be sold online and even if you haven’t figured out how to, whether it be a service or an item, your competitors are probably trying to figure out exactly how to do just that.
Whether it’s a service based industry or selling products, at the very least you should have an online presence. That way, potential customers can quickly and easily find out about your business, services that you offer and you can keep control of how you want your company to be portrayed.
The internet has changed and these days there’s a review website for pretty much everything. How much better would it be if you could upload your own testimonials and pictures?
That being said, it’s important to portray your company in a professional and positive manner and I’d have to say that you’re better off having no website at all than an unprofessional one as your website speaks volumes about you. It’s proven that we form our first impressions well within 30 seconds of meeting people. Take the last poor website you breezed over, did you even give it 30 seconds?
All in all, if you don’t have a website you’re losing business to someone else that does. Whether it be a simple contact form or online quotation system your business does need a website.
