When grouping pillows on a couch, interior designers agree that an odd number usually looks best. With loveseats, three is the magic number. But if you own a standard 6-foot sofa, count on buying five to seven pillows.

The one exception to the even-numbered rule is in more modern, contemporary-style living rooms. An even number of pillows creates the symmetry that works best here. The first thing you have to do when planning your throw pillow selection is to choose a color story. By choosing colors from around the room, your pillows will feel like they belong on that couch or bed even if they’re all different.

It’s always a good idea to choose three colors that go well together and build your throw pillow color palette from there. For example, you can choose your wall color, a color in the rug, and a piece of art hanging on the wall to make up your color story. If you’re adding throw pillows into a bedroom design, be sure one of those colors comes from the bedding you’ve already selected!

Combine Texture and Prints
Throw pillows are a great way to add character and draw the eye around the room. Try combining the textures of pillows or patterns.

However, don’t go overboard with ALL busy prints! When combining prints we recommend one busy print, one solid color, and one simple print.
