The Woven Creativity of Tagkawayan’s Local Weavers

The creativity of the Filipinos creeps through the thread of each basket, carefully crafted by the 22 local weavers of Tagkawayan last August 28-29 at their Handicraft Manufacturing Center in Brgy. Poblacion, Tagkawayan, Quezon Province.

The aim to sn**ch a history lies through the fingers of these local weavers, guided by one of our Obra scholar-graduates and internationally awarded designer, Mr. Ivan Cedric Fabia. Through his comprehensive discussions on Product Development and Mobile Photography, patterned to his distinct basket design, the weavers showcased their skills in creating an amazing basket from raw materials readily provided to them by the local government.

Alongside with the main discussions of Mr. Fabia, the HCD Section, in-charge of the Creative sector, of PTTC’s Learning Delivery Service Division (LDSD) headed by Mr. Cev Cendaña, together with Ms. Liezel Edang and Mr. Bonn Jovi Estrella, shared their knowledge and expertise through the topics on Brand Management, Costing and Pricing and Business Pitching, respectively.

The weavers motivation is to be recognized as their basket design is set to become the official Pasalubong Basket of Quezon Province. Challenges may have hindered momentarily as the norm is about to be broken, but the weavers still openly welcome the design presented by Mr. Fabia. All fingers are crossed as the 2-day training workshop was about to end.

This is a great example that, through a collaborative efforts of various entities and organizations, a common goal can be within reach. Obra Design Masterclass may have concluded months ago but the remnants of its mission continues to be felt in different parts of the country.

PTTC-GMEA is looking forward to the success of Tagkawayan Weavers through the help of Cong. Atorni Mike Tan and Gov. Doktora Helen Tan, the whole Provincial Government of Quezon represented by Mr. Lawrence Velasco and Mr. Jhon Conrad “Skyler” David during 2-day training and workshop program, the LGU of Tagkawayan through Mayor Carlos Eleazar and the guidance of Local Economic Development and Investments Promotion (LEDIP) Tagkawayan through Mr. TJ Pia and all the staff.

Every Filipino’s creativity will continue to conquer the world, as long as the government and private sector join hands in delivering programs such Obra Design Masterclass for Furniture Industry and all other projects for the creatives.

Last June 13 and 14, DTI.Philippine Trade Training Center - Global MSME Academy and Obra Pampanga Scholars Matthew David and Lee Villanueva, visited Magalang, Pampanga for the "Lubenas: Sustaining the Lantern Tradition through Entrepreneurship Development" Project. 🌟

This initiative aimed to equip lantern makers in Magalang, Pampanga with valuable skills in product development and entrepreneurship.

The project involved engaging with representatives and artisans from all 27 Barangays of Magalang. It provided a platform to showcase the community's skillful craftsmanship and the vibrant lanterns produced in each barangay.

The project underscores the power of combining culture, tradition, creativity, and entrepreneurship. By nurturing these elements, the initiative aims to significantly contribute to the economic growth of Magalang.

Earlier today, DTI.Philippine Trade Training Center - Global MSME Academy met with the Magalang, Pampanga LGU for the Community Engagement of our Obra Scholars.

"Lubenas: Sustaining the Lantern Tradition through Entreprenurship Development," aims to train the community of lantern makers in Magalang Pampanga on product development and enterpreprenuership.

Lantern making in the Philippines has a rich cultural heritage deeply intertwined with its history and traditions. Over time, lanterns evolved from being a simple bamboo structure adorned with papel de hapon to elaborate and intricately designed creations. Today, lanterns come in various shapes, sizes, and designs, often featuring vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and sometimes even incorporating modern technology

Renowned as the "Lantern Capital of the Philippines," Pampanga stands as a beacon of cultural vibrancy and festive splendor in the Philippines. This distinction has etched Pampanga's name in the annals of Philippine heritage, symbolizing not only the province's artistic prowess but also its profound sense of community, tradition, and resilience.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, lanterns hold deep cultural significance for the people of Pampanga. It serves as a symbol of hope and joy, lighting up the darkness and heralding the arrival of Christmas, a time of celebration, reflection, and renewal. Moreover, the tradition of parol-making has become a source of livelihood for many Pampangueños, sustaining local economies and fostering a sense of pride in their cultural heritage.

Our talented Obra Design Masterclass scholars recently engaged in a transformative series of Enabling Skills and Functional Skills Training, focusing on Critical Thinking led by the insightful Mr. Oliver Pangan.

Throughout the session, our scholars mastered essential techniques such as SWOT analysis, Fishbone analysis, and the Business Canvas Model. These interactive workshops empowered them to tackle complex challenges with confidence and creativity.

This training underscored the importance of critical thinking, helping our designers to identify and transform weaknesses and threats into strengths and opportunities for growth.
