Instead of the sob story approach that so many articles like this take, let's look at one glaring reason Ag's next generation may not be eager to return to farming: The generation (or two) in front of them won't get out of the way.

There's an abundance of 70+ year olds (like the subject of this article) worth millions of dollars in land holdings. Since they have no hobbies or outside interests, they opt to farm well past the age that most people retire. With U.S. Ag policy as a financial backstop, they're willing to farm for free knowing they're not likely to lose. It's not a business, it's a lifestyle. And it's boxing out Ag's next generation along with the innovative new thinking they'd bring to our industry.

Since the start of the year, the national government has fully subsidized the Marcos administration’s flagship ₱20 rice program as it rolls out a massive expansion to reach 60 million Filipinos by the end of 2026.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel said the national government has shouldered the entire subsidy for the program since Jan. 1, in contrast to last year’s setup, when local government units (LGUs) also chipped in their share.
