Japanese chemists have created a revolutionary biodegradable plastic that dissolves in seawater within hours, addressing one of the planet’s biggest environmental challenges: microplastic pollution.
Unlike conventional plastics that fragment into harmful microplastics over decades, this material fully decomposes into harmless organic compounds, leaving no trace behind. The innovation uses specialized polymers that respond to saltwater and ocean temperatures, accelerating the degradation process.
The technology could transform packaging, disposable items, and fishing gear, especially in coastal regions struggling with plastic waste accumulation. Early trials show that products made with this material retain strength and durability during use but vanish safely after disposal.
