Outdoor Common Sense Tips: A place hosting a big campsite should not let the campers decide for themselves individually of how to dispose of their wastes. Catholes are only good for 1-7 individuals. In a campsite of more than 10 people, latrines should be dug. One for the ladies which is screened for privacy and another for the gents.
The male-female ratio of latrines increases with the increased number of campers and the number of days. If more than 25, it is two-to-one if it is overnight; and three-to-one if 2-3 days. If 40 or more, it is three-to-two for overnights, and four-to-two for 2-3 days. This is now the responsibility of event organizers, camp administrators and camp ramrods and they should dig more latrine if the need arises.
Each latrine hole has a measure of three feet in length, six inches in width and eight inches in depth (3 ft x 6 in x 8 in). It should be 150-200 feet away from water sources, streams, ponds and riparian areas; and 150-200 feet away from your camp and the main trail. Never place it on the lowest part of the ground and along dry water courses.
Take notice of the general direction of the wind too for you might not enjoy your coffee in the morning. You only learn this on the subject of Ethical Bushcraft.
