We've noticed quite a few new faces around here lately, so we thought we'd take a moment to reintroduce ourselves.

We're Jina and Derek, the husband-and-wife team behind Perey Studio.

Somehow, what felt like a little side adventure turned into a decade of making furniture. This year marks 10 years since we began our journey in 2016.

What started as a shared love of design, woodworking, and creating with our hands has grown into a family studio rooted in the belief that the things we live with every day can be beautiful, useful, and made to last.

These days, everyone seems to be talking about AI, automation, and the future of work. Meanwhile, we're still over here moving heavy slabs of wood around and making sawdust.

And while technology can do incredible things, it has only strengthened our appreciation for work that remains deeply human.

The kind that requires patience, skill, problem-solving, and occasionally realizing the tape measure was in your pocket the whole time.

Thank you for being here and for supporting independent craftsmanship over the past 10 years. We're grateful you're along for the ride 🙏🏼

Glimpses of the process

There is a deeply wholesome feeling in stepping into the studio in the quiet mornings. We are now a family of four, and as we raise our children while continuing our work, we strive to be intentional in everything we do. This kind of work asks for presence. There are no shortcuts. Each piece is shaped with care, carrying the time and attention it deserves.

Between the rhythm of family life and the rhythm of the studio, we continue to build not just heirloom pieces, but a way of living. One that values patience, craft, and the quiet beauty of doing things well.

At times, we consider creating more content, participating in more design events, and expanding our reach. Then we pause and remember how far we have come and what truly matters. Mastering a craft requires time, and when raising young children, that time becomes even more precious.

We are grateful for those who recognize and value this work and continue to support what we do. To our fellow makers, keep refining your craft. The rest will follow 🙏🏼

A tribute to the magic of spalted wood 🪵✨️🍄
When a tree dies or has otherwise been stressed, fungi can infiltrate it in waves of primary and secondary colonizers. The first wave captures and controls the wood’s resources, even changing the pH of the wood and its structure. This first wave of invading fungi then has to defend against the second wave of colonizers. What we see as beautiful lines in the wood are actually boundaries drawn by different fungal colonies defending their territory.
These fungal boundaries are the reason that there is no regular pattern or logic to designs. This is the uniqueness of spalted wood, and this is one of the many reasons we continue to pursue this fascinating art form 🙏🏻

Custom dining table legs from teak ✨️
This piece was made with large tenons between the stretchers and the legs to ensure the strength of each joint and prevent the joints from loosening over time. This type of joinery, combined with teak's wood characteristics and the downward weight of the table, ensures a very stable base.
Thanks to our client for sharing photos with us of the finished dining room. It is always a pleasure to be a part of the making of a home 🙏🏻

What is Spalted Wood?
Spalted wood is the coloration and detailed dark lines that occur from fungal growth in wood. The unique patterns and coloration of the "spalting" process can increase the value of wood. Knowing tips and tricks on how to get wood to spalt properly allows us to discover beauties and colors that truly makes a piece unique ✨
