Details from a set of five tray frames we made for the incredible . The Eucalyptus Punctata (Grey Gum) as with most of our timbers was milled locally. Working this very dense timber with intensely interlocked grain requires the sharpest tools and lessons in patience - but look at that figure! Well worth the perseverance. 🥵 🔪 Thanks for entrusting us with this work Jade!.

Mediterranean vibes in situ. Macrocarpa door with curved top to match existing door frame. This door was replicated from the original built by the customers late husband, so was a special one, and a pleasure to make. Solid laminated 43mm thick panels finished with Rubio Monocoat. Getting that top curve to match the existing imperfect curve of the frame for a consistent header gap was a sweaty one! 🤎

Summer is just behind the timber stacks-ish 🌞 Outdoor dining set in solid Fastigata for a customers covered area. Loving the cleans lines created by the trapezoidal legs. Bottom side stretchers are offset by an unobtrusive 10mm to allow for a deck with moves 🪘🥂.

It's been a hot minute! We've been a bit quiet in this space but rest assured plenty has been happening 😅 .
Pictured is a solid Saligna table we sent out a lovely customer a couple of weeks ago.
This was a fun one.
Hexadecagonal splayed legs on a round top. We weren't keen on the questionable screw-in hardware you often find on this type of assembly so we went for an exceptionally robust cheats mortise and tenon ( 🧠 we had to laminate to achieve the 75mm leg diameter so why not? 🤷🏼)

It's true: MacBlack Timber is for sale. Please share if you know someone who might be the perfect new owner. We're a special kind of timber business: we deal in alternatives to radiata that are locally grown here in New Zealand (think macrocarpa, blackwood, poplar, elm, eucalypts and more). And we're a remarkably integrated business, handling everything from sourcing logs, sawmilling, seasoning, retailing roughsawn timber, producing flooring, panelling and cladding and creating bespoke joinery. Those interested should talk to Steve at Kauri Business Brokers.

RNZ came to visit and we're featured in an episode of Country Life! You can download the show at the link below (it's longer and more interesting than the brief written summary—listen if you can). The tour took in Papaiti Forest too, MacBlack's owner's continuous canopy product forest, which is now supplying logs to MacBlack's operation.
Richard Thompson planted Papaiti forest with alternative species 30 years ago. He never dreamt at the time he would become a timber merchant with a joinery workshop and retail shed.

TOTARA TIMBER FOR SALE MacBlack rarely deals in native timbers but we do at the moment have small amounts of totara available for immediate sale. We have clear boards in different dimensions, plus some seconds.
Totara is highly valued by wood carvers. It has a very straight grain, is very stable and finishes well. The very durable heartwood is a reddish brown colour. Photo shows boards marked with their length in metres and grade.
These boards have been milled locally by MacBlack's milling team, in strict accordance with MPI regulations (Milling Approval number 7-07-02835).
Call 0204 622 255, email [email protected] or stop in at the yard, 44 Peat Street Whanganui. We ship around the country.

Quality DRY FIREWOOD: $65 for ~half a cube of offcuts from our timber yard. Mixture of macrocarpa and misc hardwoods and softwoods, cut to firebox length. It's a lucky dip (depends on what orders we are making up) but there's likely gum in there too. Perfect if you don't have a trailer, you can hand load into your boot. Or we'll forklift the woolsack onto the back of your ute or trailer. Pick up 8.30am-4.45pm M-F at 44 Peat Street (delivery not available) Call ahead to check availability if you want, 020 462 2255

We’re all about beautiful timber from start to finish and have over two dozen species in stock. (None of them are radiata pine.) We sell a variety of grades, from framing all the way up to clear, and dispatch around New Zealand.
We also grow some exceptional trees in our own forest planted in the early 90s. We mill around our district with a low-impact, portable mill, getting the best out of every log. At our yard, we take great care to slowly air dry the boards. Not least, the MacBlack team makes some beautiful furniture and joinery. Visit www.macblack.co.nz for more details.
