Maintaining your home is very important, if you don't, you run the risk of the exterior cladding allowing moisture into your home which then creates mould and an unhealthy home for your family. The remedial work also becomes a lot more extensive as you can't just take out the mould and damaged timber, you need to remove a significant more of the framing and structure to ensure there isn't a reoccurrence. Ceiling mould keeps coming back?

Another coat of paint probably isn’t the answer.

Mould is often the visible sign of a moisture problem somewhere else — a roof or plumbing leak, poor ventilation, or condensation building up where you can’t see it.

If the ceiling lining has been repeatedly wet, simply treating and repainting the surface may only hide the problem.

The better approach is to find the moisture source, fix it properly, assess the affected lining and replace it where necessary.

One proper repair can save you from painting the same ceiling again and again.

Find the cause. Fix it once.

Getting quotes for double glazing? Don’t compare them on price alone.

Two windows can both be called “double glazed” and deliver very different results in a Wellington winter.

Thermal-break frames, Low-E glass and argon gas all influence performance. And even the right window can underperform if the installation, flashings and sill details aren’t right.

The question isn’t simply, “Is it double glazed?” It’s “What am I actually getting?”

Don’t just double glaze. Do it right.

What makes a deck last for decades isn’t necessarily the expensive timber you see on top.

It’s the footings, framing, ventilation, fixings and connections underneath, along with materials suited to Wellington conditions and the right consent where required.

A beautiful finish can’t compensate for poor construction underneath.

Build it properly from the ground up, and you can enjoy it for decades.

A retaining wall can look like a straightforward repair. But depending on its height and what it's supporting, there may be more involved than simply replacing what's there.

Building consent and engineering requirements can apply—and ignoring them can create a problem that doesn't surface until years later when you decide to sell.

An unconsented retaining wall may be identified through property records or a building inspection, potentially leading to extra costs, delays and uncomfortable questions from buyers.

The smart approach? Understand what's required before construction starts.

Build it right. Consent it right.
