Wai-iti Free Range Eggs GENUINE FARM RANGE EGGS!! Well, not sure why we located in Nelson City when we are really on the other side of Wakefield, but at least the country is correct.

We have been in operation since December 2015 and are proud to have three sheds, all mobile, on our property. Each shed has two paddocks (one resting at any time) and the hens are free to be inside or outside as they see fit. Their favourite spots are the dust baths under the trees and the gate at feedtime. One thing we have found is happy hens make awesome eggs!

I cooked up wheat and barley for one of the groups of chooks and popped it in the blue bucket. Down further is dog roll...

I cooked up wheat and barley for one of the groups of chooks and popped it in the blue bucket. Down further is dog roll, chopped up. I put the bucket down and went back inside for less than a minute. Can you tell how far down the dog roll might be?

Each day, I try to make a note of the things I am grateful for. Today, I am grateful I turned the electric fence off.... very, very grateful. It is amazing how all encompassing netting can become... and how quickly chooks come to see if you are edible. I am also happy to have an outside job today!

This morning it was a case of "I love my job, I love my job... you know what? Anyone know of a nice office job?" Torrential rain and strong wind... even the chooks weren't silly enough to come out...

And yep... I went out without a raincoat... hate them!

Just a quick update given there is a large fire frolicking around our area...We have been told to prepare for evacuation...

Just a quick update given there is a large fire frolicking around our area...

We have been told to prepare for evacuation, so have moved some of our operations to Richmond... including 300 chicks in a shrink-wrapped crated trailer.

Our deliveries might be a bit disrupted but we will be doing our best to get eggs out as normal. At this point we are going home during the day to check the girls and collect eggs.

Those out there on the front line dealing with the fire, along with all those who are tirelessly working for the community, are just fantastic. In unlucky times, we are still so lucky.

We were about to go out and as we went past our young girls we were surprised to see them running into join a huddle (chicken run plan being hatched?). They looked curious and a bit anxious but very fascinated. The cause?

Ducks!! Mr and Mrs Mallard, who were quite unconcerned about the fact they could get mobbed (flocked?) at any given moment.

And here was me thinking I am an egg wrangler...

Maybe I have been influenced a wee bit by what I have heard about the movie "Chicken Run", but do you think I should be concerned to come home to a wee huddle of chooks having a conference away from the main flock? When I got out of the car to take a photo, they started running in my direction.... so I got back in my car real fast, just in case they were all stirred up on nefarious plots...
