You know that sofa you avoid sitting in because the back cushions feel like cardboard?

We just fixed one of those.

The original dense foam back squabs were replaced with new loose fill inners — and the difference is immediate. Softer, more forgiving, and they actually move with you rather than against you.

Same sofa. Completely different experience.

This is one of our favourite quick wins — no reupholstery required, just a simple inner replacement that transforms how a sofa feels to sit in.

Meet the team behind Wanaka Upholstery.

We're Bevan and Bonnie, and between us we've spent more time covered in fabric scraps and foam dust than we care to admit.

Bevan is a second-generation upholsterer with over 30 years of experience and a title most people don't even know exists, Master Upholsterer, recognised by the International Guild of Master Craftsmen. His passion for the craft started working alongside his father before an apprenticeship in Auckland, and since then he's worked on everything from priceless antiques to a 1934 Duesenburg once owned by Hollywood actress Carole Lombard. Not bad for a day's work.

Bonnie keeps everything moving, from customer experience and fabric selection to making sure the business runs smoothly behind the scenes.

Together we handle everything from full sofa reupholstery and dining chair makeovers to classic car interiors, boat cushions, outdoor covers, and the occasional mystery treasure unearthed from a 1970s armchair.

This chair was a Wanaka Wastebusters find from over 10 years ago, which looks like originally part of a sectional sofa.

What a transformation! The owner took a chance on Peony Plush from Warwick Fabrics (NZ) Ltd, seeing it online only. The risk paid off. Fl**ge seams, and the addition of a matching cushion really makes it.

We were also asked to make these beautiful hand carved dining chairs more comfortable with a foam seat, in the same bright pink velvet. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the finished project, so you'll need to use your imagination!
