We’ve loved developing this home over the past year, and it’s exciting to see consents approved and work now under way on site. Providing shelter from the extremes of Te Anau weather, the large spanning and cantilevered roof consists of mass timber CLT from , supported by hidden LVL beams from , and engineering by .

Among so many inspiring projects, we’re grateful to receive the Supreme Awards at this year’s Architectural Design Awards.

From the judges - “Red Pine Villa stands as a testament to sustainable design and contextual sensitivity. Post-earthquake, this project emphasises the importance of maintaining embodied memory through the recycling of materials and transportable design. The house respects tradition through its form and materiality, while the perforated panels allow for a dynamic play of light, creating layered and filtered interior spaces. Its orientation gestures to the west, aligning with the streetscape proportions and ensuring futureproofing for growth and financial stability.”

It means a lot to be recognised, and to be part of this community.

We have just delivered our contribution to upcoming show ‘Pleasure Garden’. Opening night is this Friday - see you there!

From Objectspace:

Pleasure Garden
8 Nov–14 Dec
Opening night 7 Nov 5-7pm

Through a host of objects made in reverence to the natural world, Pleasure Garden explores the joys of being outside, whether within the manicured constraints of prim courtyards, hand-tended market gardens, or overgrown and rambling backyards. Gardens tell us much about people’s relationships to place and nature, and give us opportunities to cultivate intimate connections with our immediate environments.

Curated by Zoe Black .a.black and Jordan Davey-Emms , Pleasure Garden assembles artists who are called to the whenua for inspiration, including new commissions from Emma Wallbanks , Amelia Fagence and Mitchell Coll.

Our gratitude to the .nz supporters who have made this exhibition possible, and to match-funders Rātā Foundation, and Christchurch City Council.

Red Pine Villa was also recognised in the recent Architectural Design Awards, with the Kaitiakitanga Award being especially meaningful for us and the homeowners.

From the judges - “Red Pine Villa advances a spatial reading of kaitiakitanga as an architectural ethic, rooted in custodial responsibility. Rather than framing sustainability as technical performance alone, the project integrates long-term environmental care, material frugality, and sensitivity to context as forms of cultural stewardship embedded within the built environment.

Red Pine Villa offers a thoughtful reinterpretation of suburban living, positioning a compact and sustainable design as a quiet yet radical challenge to prevailing housing norms in post-quake Christchurch.”

It was great to have the and .store building recognised at the recent Architectural Design Awards. Once a cold, rundown building with minimal street appeal, its repurposed architectural merits and adjustable thermal and natural light filtering solutions now create a unique and comfortable working environment.

From the judges - “Through a sensitive adaptive reuse approach, the building reimagines an existing structure while contributing positively to the urban streetscape. Simplified lines and contemporary forms lend the addition a sense of clarity and playfulness, reinforcing the character of the street.

A calming sage green defines the exterior, paired with soft neutral screens. Verdant tones are used thoughtfully throughout, reinforcing the design’s inviting and organic aesthetic.”
