Originally designed in 1974, the Limit Lounge Chair by Normann Copenhagen is an elegant expression of restraint and enduring design. Its sculptural simplicity is defined by two slender steel rails and a suspended textile seat, creating an almost weightless silhouette that offers a surprisingly generous sense of comfort. Rooted in the philosophy that less can be more, Limit transforms material economy into quiet sophistication—a timeless piece where refined proportions, considered construction and effortless comfort come together.

Vineyard House
Set amongst the vineyards of Hawke’s Bay, this architecturally designed home by Clarkson Architects combines strong forms, natural materials and a warm, considered palette.
The Kartell Kabuki Floor Lamp by Ferruccio Laviani adds a playful touch of colour. Its sculptural, lace-like form contrasts with the clean architectural lines, while the transparent green finish catches the natural light and subtly connects the interior to the vineyard beyond.

We enjoyed collaborating with Warren and Mahoney Architects on the refurbishment of the apartment-level lobby within Wellington’s heritage-listed Odlins Building.
The design carefully balances the building’s architectural character with a refined contemporary sensibility. Timber panelled walls are complemented by a considered collection of art, while our locally made JWB Armchairs, paired with the Slow Oval Coffee Table by Stellar Works, introduce warmth, texture, and a sense of understated comfort to the shared space.

There’s also a pleasing connection to the building’s history. In the late 1940s, Backhouse was purchasing timber from C.A. Odlins — a small but meaningful link between our own material history and the building we’ve now had the opportunity to contribute to.

A full-circle story, brought into the present.

Refined Approach.
The Normann Copenhagen Bell Lights bring a soft, sculptural presence to this elegant kitchen and dining space designed by Shaun Cothill of thestudiostill. Their generously rounded forms and warm sand colour create a beautiful contrast against the tactile wood, veined marble and refined cabinetry, while their generous scale gives the room a strong architectural focal point.
Paired above the table, the Bell Lights add an inviting sense of symmetry and intimacy without overwhelming this beautifully detailed space.

Openness and Shelter
The M House by Ponting Fitzgerald Architects.
Set amongst the rolling countryside of Martinborough, this holiday home is surrounded by a young olive grove that now produces exceptional olive oil under the owners’ beautifully understated M brand. Framed by wide skies, open paddocks and neat rows of silver-green olive trees, it’s a place that feels deeply connected to the landscape.

Poetic and Sturdy
