This lovely old Burr walnut piano has been through the transformation machine here at Earthwood, And now has a new position in our modern times as a desk for a large laptop!

Made from solid Rimu, and the drawer sides made from Kauri, with Oregon Pine plywood bases, this lovely chest of drawers can be dated to between 1930 and 1940.

EARTHWOOD carried out many minor repairs on this item and some trickier ones which included inserting solid timber between broken timbers. We re-joined the split top by adding a new fillet of wood into the split. We also replaced the drawer runners inside the cabinet, and the bottom edges of the drawer itself. Then we stripped the entire chest of drawers, getting rid of all the white paint before re-polishing and applying a sturdy two-pack polyurethane coating to complete a lovely piece of furniture.

Completed, this is a very elegant piece, especially with its newly stripped brass handles which had previously been painted green. It should give its owner another 50-60 years of very hard wear.

These gorgeous Cape Cod chairs were made by their owner’s father. The Cape Cod chair is a traditional classic American outdoor chair with a fan-shaped back-rest, broad arm-rests and a deep, angled seat.

these two lovelies were completely dismantled by EARTHWOOD, and painted with a quality water-based primer, followed by a water-based top coat. Although the paint isn’t a tough polyurethane, it moves according to the temperature, maintaining a film between wood and weather, and allowing ease of touch-up to keep them looking beautiful.

This colour, Resene St.Kilda, is absolutely fabulous, We always love the before and after pics which remind us of how much difference expert attention can make.

This magnificent piece of furniture is a standing desk (circa 1930). We’re not sure what this one was used for since it had been standing in the owner’s orchard-shed since he was a young child, but they were variously used by auctioneers, paymasters, and also by those who simply needed the relief from being seated all day. This one is extremely robust. Initially it looked like Teak but once EARTHWOOD sanded it down and removed years of accumulated wear and patina, we discovered instead a rather beautifully-coloured Honduras Mahogany complete with stunning grain, and Kauri as a construction contrast.

Once EARTHWOOD stripped this piece back, we finished it in a two-pack polyurethane which will withstand another 100 years of use.

This standing desk now holds pride of place in its owner’s house and is a classic case of it never being too late to retrieve any piece of furniture, no matter what its condition.

This bedroom suite is an example of the classic 1970s furniture era, and is made from solid warm-coloured Sapele Mahogany (also known as Sapeli, or Sapelli). It was in dire need of attention with all the surfaces sticky and most unattractive. This type of surface coating damage is not uncommon with furniture of this era because they were coated with popular-in-the-day nitrocellulose lacquer. Nitrocellulose was quite hard-wearing but could not sustain contact with heat, water, or chemicals so the the coating tended to damage easily through normal use unless the furniture was looked after very carefully.

Sapele Mahogany is a frequently exported African timber, and therefore of significant economic importance in tropical Africa. It's commonly used for cabinetry, veneer, furniture, musical instruments, plywood,flooring, boat-building, turning and sundry craft items.

EARTHWOOD stripped the entire suite back to the beautiful natural timber which is always brand new underneath. It will always look brand new after a strong two-pack polyurethane coating has been applied over the top of the rejuvenated wood. It's beauty will be a source of admiration through the window of the surface coating for many a year to come.

Rosewood is such beautiful timber. Its rich, gorgeous natural colour requires no staining. Just the pure naked wood you are looking at is what you get when you run with Rosewood.

This oriental carved Rosewood dining table pedestal arrived in the country in unfortunate pieces. EARTHWOOD carefully cleaned it up, filling where necessary, then re-glued and re-fitted it. Once completed, we polished it back to its original condition, and finished with a semi-gloss two-pack polyurethane to match the original colour of the natural timber.

The damage is very difficult to discern now, and it's as strong as before, and will serve well for its intended purpose for many years. You'd be surprised by what can be fixed, and we love the surprises of lovely timbers to work with. Isn't it beautiful.
