Tidying up the wood finishes in Nathan House/Pukepuke Manurewa, a summer house built by the Karangahape Road dwelling Nathan’s in 1925. It’s a bit of a mosh mash of styles but a grand building repurposed for public use and the gardens are delightful. The window is from a 17thc Dutch church.

The books are back! Remuera library reopened this morning with karakia and waiata from Ngati Whatua mokopuna and elders, good speech on the importance of heritage by deputy mayor and generous comments by librarian Sue Jackson about my work, Argon Construction were terrific to work with.

Fascinating to see the monumental new Mormon Temple in Auckland that looms over the southern motorway at Manukau. Was not allowed to photograph the interior but saw lots of beautiful work on the inside. Open for another couple of weeks.

It’s that chair again….! The Larnach’s Castle chair my old boss, mentor and friend William Cottrell discovered on Trademe last year that I restored and was featured in the landmark chair exhibition over the summer. The Otago Daily Times featured its return on the front page on 8 June. Will be good to visit it one day

Huge kanuka tree crowned with a gigantic wig of wisteria vine 5” diameter at the base. It tore down some ti kouka (cabbage) trees and wiped out the Camelia. A lot of chainsawing to do 😓 Help yourself to firewood please, will require a lot of drying though.

Rimu hall chair from Larnach’s Castle Otago photographed at my workshop by for for The Chair: a story of making and design in Aotearoa 2 Dec 2023 - 3 Match 2024 in Ponsonby, Auckland. From the description by my old employer and friend: Aesthetics Movement Hall Chair Dunedin Iron and Woodware Company Ltd 1873-74

Collection of Dr William Cottrell

This superb rimu hall chair was originally made for William Larnach's 'castle' on Otago Peninsula. It is in the Aesthetics Movement Style, but unusually for New Zealand-made furniture, the chair exhibits a culturally diverse range of decorative features, from Middle Eastern, or Moorish elements, to Etruscan, Romanesque, and Islamic influences. Given the exuberant décor of Larnach Castle, even a single hall chair can illustrate the Victorian era's fascination for the exotic and muddled focus on historic detail.
