Magnesium Alloy [ Denim / Black Iridium ] M-Frame Sunglasses by Oakley c. 2002

For a brief period in the early 2000s, Oakley swapped out their usual plastic O-Matter construction for an experimental Magnesium Alloy, produced for only 2 years.

The frame is constructed from lightweight magnesium alloy, an unusually advanced material choice for eyewear, offering high strength and rigidity at exceptionally low weight. The rare Magnesium version uses a precisely formed metal chassis, giving the piece a distinctly technical character.

This example retains its original lens in exceptional, scratch-free condition. Removable and replaceable through the use of recessed torx screws.

Finished in a denim blue, with Oakley branding and technical detailing throughout. A particularly scarce and collectible branch of the M-Frame family, representing Oakley at its most experimental, where industrial design, sports technology and material engineering converge.

A table held together with tension. Thanks to the natural spring effect of wood, the [ Sparondo ] dining table needs no screws or other connecting parts for assembly. Taken apart or put together in a matter of minutes, the legs flex and click into place on the underside of the table is an intriguing and firm way. A beautiful process to behold.

One of my favourite furniture companies, a piece from Nils Holger Moormann will always surprise and delight with unique yet super simple means of assembly.

Utilitarian materials are always used, beech wood with a laminate surface in this instance. A perfect lightweight compact table for a smaller space.

Two iconic kettles from two iconic designers.

Separated by thousands of kilometres and multiple decades, they show an intriguing comparison between a kettle born from craft and traditional technique and one born from more radical ideas and architectural forms.

They function exactly the same. Both boil water and bring joy to that simple age old process. Which is your favourite?

Compact vintage Japanese folding Binoculars by Crystar. Often referred to as opera glasses, the body folds neatly in on itself, reducing the form to a slim pocket sized package while protecting the optics when stored.

These caught my eye in the 1987 Bond film ‘The Living Daylights’ where their adjustable form and utilitarian detailing allowed them to slot seamlessly into the array of other bond gadgets.

Made in Japan and typical of the finely engineered, highly functional optical objects produced during the mid-century period, they combine a simple lens system with a precise folding mechanism and central focus. At 2.5× magnification, they are intended for close-range viewing rather than serious long-distance observation.

Perfectly suited to the theatre, concert hall or simply as an intriguing everyday object. As shown, you can use them to hunt out a nice bottle of wine on the shelf

Crafted from heavy, fluidly shaped glass, the [ Urchin ] ashtray perfectly captures the space-age, biomorphic aesthetic of legendary Australian industrial designer Marc Newson.

The glass features 15 smooth, machine-cut cigarette rests along the upper rim.

The design originated in 1995 as a promotional commission for the Swedish to***co brand Blend, then a solid green crystal version for the tables of London’s ultra-trendy Coast Restaurant. Seeing its brilliant sculptural appeal, design director, Tom Dixon, brought this version to British retailer Habitat in 1998, instantly turning a utilitarian object into a highly collectible piece of late-90s pop culture. There may be some controversy about his ability to design a Ferrari, but he sure makes a killer ashtray.

An early edition cream 4610-50 umbrella stand, distinguished by its contrasting metal rim. A particularly characterful example of Gino Colombini’s early work for Kartell c.1965

The moulded form is deceptively simple, with a deep cylindrical body and distinctive side openings designed to neatly contain umbrellas.

The metal lip adds a subtle industrial detail to the otherwise soft, monolithic form. This metal detail is no longer included with new production models and hasn’t been for some time.

An articulated accordion-like folding mechanism allows this two-tier trolley to collapse almost completely flat with a simple movement.

The Gastone trolley from Kartell. Designed by Antonio Citterio & Glen Oliver Löw c. 1991.

The structure combines a slim chrome-plated steel frame with polished aluminium feet and two trays formed from glass-fibre-reinforced nylon. Balanced when both expanded or contracted, it’s a sleek addition to any room that can be tucked away in a flash if desired, not that you’d ever really want to.

A handful of smalls included in this weeks collection.

The favourite, 1989 Alessi napkin rings with 5 unique cut out motifs. Boxed and unused.

There’s also a classic Stelton water jug in grey designed by Erik Magnussen, alongside the locally made Audiosonic LP or book holder in a deep brown tone.
