FjordMoods´ design furniture is hand made from all reclaimed wood. The small Norwegian company is aiming for an ecological footprint as small as possible and turns driftwood from the Hardanger fjord into high end furniture.
Being resourceful and making art in a sustainable way is the main focus of FjordMoods, a company founded by husband and wife Pieter and Katrine Van Tulder.
Instead of getting wood from the forest, FjordMoods uses only reclaimed materials in the furniture production.
– Used wood is as good as wood from the forest. It just requires a different approach, says designer and maker Pieter Van Tulder.
Containers, old barns and dumpster parks all hold wood that Pieter uses for FjordMoods´ furniture. He processes driftwood and other wood considered waste into standard sizes. He then uses it for his design pieces.
– I do it because I care for the natural environment. To me it makes sense to try to do your absolute best to take care of our planet. Reusing and being resourceful is within our nature, says Van Tulder.
From time to time Katrine and Pieter go on the fjord with a small boat to get driftwood for the production.
– To be able to take a boat on a Monday morning and sail on a beautiful fjord to a beautiful island, scavenge some wood and think a bit about life, that to me is not only a good job, but a good life, says Pieter.
FjordMoods is based in Hardanger, Norway. The workshop´s scenic surroundings are breathtaking. Inbetween the fjord and the Folgefonna glacier you find fruit trees and forest. Nature itself makes Hardanger a very inspiring place to work.
Designing and hand crafting furniture from reclaimed wood is Van Tulder´s way to be true to himself and his ecological surroundings. He is currently working with expanding his production involving social work spaces in a human-friendly structure.
– If a society wants to flourish, the economy needs social ethics. These days it has become quite clear that it also needs to have ecological ethics, says Van Tulder.
He wishes that FjordMoods gives a positive contribution to society and will inspire people to find their own strength of kindness.
