What’s your view on how the European Commission can best support its member states in meeting waste targets?

Municipal waste remains one of the most complex waste streams to manage. According to a recent EU report, only 9 EU member states are on track to meet the 2025 re-use and recycling targets for municipal and all packaging waste. The report also shows that there are significant differences in waste management performance across the EU. Reforms are needed to meet the targets.

The Commission lists specific recommendations for the member states that are at risk of not achieving the main 2025 recycling targets. These recommendations cover a broad range of actions: reducing non-recyclable waste, increasing reuse, boosting separate collection, developing waste treatment capacities for sorting and recycling, improving governance, deploying economic instruments and awareness-raising.

What’s value got to do with it?

A lot! Because just imagine what would happen if we could turn waste streams into material streams!? Materials retain their value, instead of being trashed as worthless waste.

We are still basking in the afterglow of yesterday’s Frontrunner Partner Event 🧡

Together with a group of purpose-driven, courageous and creative frontrunner partners, we gathered at Object Carpet in Krefeld to share best practices and brainstorm on common challenges that emerge when transitioning towards a circular economy and how to tackle them. Topics like product development, legislation, marketing storytelling and much needed data and recycling infrastructure were discussed.

📣 This is a call for global facts & figures! 📣

Being the circular economy geeks that we are, we’ve been searching the internet for proper, proven facts & figures regarding bulky waste. Of course, our focus has been on the volume of mattresses, carpets and panels that are trashed (or incinerated) each and every year.

We ended up with literally piles of figures. Unfortunately, few of them verifiable. And, as you know, we’re sticklers for transparency. Because we want to stick to the facts when it comes to product circularity. Not false premises. So we hummed and hawed about what to do next. And were bogged down with the sinking feeling that we’d never get this one sorted.

Then we remembered our very own !

🔄The road to circularity is not for the faint-hearted. It comes with hands-on hard work and a dash of daring.

💪🏻So it always makes us particularly happy to see partners get to the point where everything comes together in an innovative, circular solution.

🎉 This recently was the case with our partner Revor Bedding at the interzum trade fair in Cologne. Here they unveiled their circular mattress portfolio. With this launch, the Belgian manufacturer of beds and mattresses, is moving the bedding industry towards sustainable and environmentally conscious production. Revor CEO Jan Maes comments: "For over two years, we have been working on the development of the circular mattress and have brought various versions to market during this period to meet the diverse needs of retailers and consumers."

✋🏻 Revor’s circular mattress is made from only two raw materials: metal and polyester. These are used for the core and down to the smallest detail, such as the zipper in the mattress cover.
