SAME DNA, DIFFERENT LOGBOOKS.

Side by side at our yard: the fully refitted “Taeke Hadewych” and the brand new Puffin 42 "Fina". Both shining as if they've just been launched. Both built for the open sea. Yet their stories couldn't be more different.

Taeke Hadewych carries a remarkable history. Previously owned by renowned Dutch sailor and writer Eerde Beulakker and his wife Hedwig, he sailed well beyond ordinary cruising grounds. His logbook contains long northern voyages to Bear Island, cold waters around Spitsbergen, far south in the wake of Shackleton. Six books were written about journeys aboard him.

Over the years, the Taeke Hadewych became deeply connected to the Van Westerhoven family, who chose not just to preserve him, but to prepare him for many more years at sea.

A complete refit at VMG Yachtbuilders followed, guided by Olivier van Meer Design, who is also responsible for the design of the new Puffin. The Taeke Hadewych received a new interior, his hull was treated and he has been repainted stem to stern. He looks brand new. He isn’t.

Next to him lies Fina. Brand new, with only a few miles under her keel yet. Her stories still have to be written.

Despite the years between them, the connection is immediately visible. The same sturdy character. Both with timeless lines. Two yachts built to go somewhere real, each in their own time.

One logbook full. One still blank.

THE STORY BEHIND THE “PUFFIN”

A few years ago we made a film with Olivier van Meer, the designer and driving force behind Puffin Yachts. In this video, he explains in his own words why he designed the Puffin in the first place, how her concept took shape, and what makes the idea still relevant today.

Now that the newest “Puffin 42” is sailing, it feels like the right moment to share this film again. The first footage of her under sail shows exactly what the Puffin stands for. A purposeful yacht with a clear signature, built to be used and built to go places.

If you want to understand the philosophy behind the Puffin, this is the film to watch. Be inspired. And who knows, maybe you will own a Puffin some day.

SPORT FISH EXPRESS: WHERE CRAFTSMANSHIP STARTS TO SPEAK FOR ITSELF

Hull number 2, the first Express model in this sport fish series, is taking shape beautifully. While much attention in yacht building often goes to paint, engines and technical systems, these photos highlight another side of the build. A side where VMG Yachtbuilders truly makes the difference.

At VMG, we are an allround yachtbuilder, but one of our real strengths lies in high-end carpentry. Our woodwork team delivers craftsmanship of the highest level every single day, building interior and exterior elements with precision, care and an eye for detail. It is one of the reasons these sport fish boats for the American market are being built here in the Netherlands.

The progress of this first Express model shows exactly why. Much of the interior is already in place, and even without upholstery, the quality of the woodwork speaks for itself. The clean lines, the detailing, the finish and the warmth of the interior already give a clear impression of what this boat will become once completed.

The same goes for the exterior details now taking shape, with the signature teak elements that define these boats and give them their recognisable character.

This is the kind of work our carpentry team takes pride in every day. Precision joinery, beautifully finished woodwork, and the understanding that details make the difference. Hull number 2 is already showing what kind of boat she is going to be, and it is safe to say she will be a real eyecatcher once finished.

PUFFIN 42: FIRST SAILING FOOTAGE

She sails. These are the first official moving images of the new “Puffin 42” by Olivier van Meer Design and VMG Yachtbuilders. There was no sunshine, but the footage is still beautiful and it is clear she is enjoying herself out on the water.

This is a tough, purposeful “Puffin 42”, built as a true explorer. Her bare aluminium hull forms a strong and honest base, combined with a white painted modern superstructure. The integrated bimini and solar arch is a real statement piece and gives her that confident explorer look that fits her character perfectly.

Most importantly, these first miles confirmed what we hoped for. She feels balanced, responsive and very capable under sail. A yacht that is built to be used, and built to go places.

We are proud to bring this “Puffin 42” to life and even more proud that we are able to deliver her to her owner. We wish them many safe miles and a lot of enjoyment on the water. From what we have seen so far, she is ready for it.

ZACA 73 “SELENE” READY FOR THE SEASON

“Selene” is being prepared for the season ahead. Over the past period, she has been with us under cover, giving our team the right conditions to carry out a cosmetic refresh and a few practical upgrades.

Her hull, inner bulwarks and superstructure have been fully resprayed, giving her exterior a clean, fresh look again. At the same time, the exterior woodwork has received a new coat of varnish, bringing back the depth and shine that make such a difference on a yacht like this.

With the paint and varnish work completed, “Selene” is now moving into the final stage of the winter programme. Her mast has been reinstalled, the boom has been upgraded, and a new bimini canvas has been added, ready for comfortable days on the water.

Since her first refit, “Selene” has been part of our Total Care programme. Together with her designer Olivier van Meer design, we keep a close eye on her year round, plan and coordinate maintenance, and take the full scope of upkeep off the owner’s hands. This year, a cosmetic refit was on the schedule and the result speaks for itself. “Selene” is looking great again and she is ready for the season ahead.

Interested in our Total Care programme for your own yacht? Feel free to get in touch with our team.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE YARD | APRIL 2026

April has been an active month at the yard, with several projects completed and others moving into their next phase.

Over the past weeks, several refit and maintenance projects have been delivered, while work continues across the yard.

SeaBear came in for several specific works. Her patented Olivier van Meer Design keel construction was inspected, cleaned and repainted, the drinking water tank was cleaned and coated, and the coach roof was fully renewed after removal of the teak, hatches and dorades.

Simmerdream returned to us during the winter period. Systems were checked, finishes reviewed and small adjustments made to ensure everything is as it should be.

Papillon was with us for maintenance and service, preparing her for the season ahead.

A familiar yacht also returned. In 2023, we completed a full interior and exterior refit of Taeke Hadewych together with Olivier van Meer Design. He is now back with us for minor maintenance, readying him for the new season.

Puffin 42 has successfully completed her sea trials. The finishing touches are now being applied before she is handed over to her owner.

On Jeff, progress continues as we build her back up. The aluminium roof has been painted, preparations are underway to add canvas for protection from the elements, and the new floor stays true to the boat’s character.

Selene is being prepared for the season ahead. Her hull, inner bulwarks and superstructure have been resprayed, the exterior woodwork has received a new coat of varnish, her mast has been reinstalled, the boom upgraded, and a new bimini canvas has been added.

The Sport Fish series is progressing well. On the Express version, the interior is close to completion, while the coverboards and propeller shafts are now in place.

Work on Patriot continues. This refit is carried out by Holland Jachtbouw as part of the VMG Group, in collaboration with Vripack Yacht Design. She is fully wrapped for spray work on the hull, inner bulwarks and deck. After that, work on the underwater body will continue, followed by the next stages of the refit, including deck installation, the crew bathroom and the rebuild, with systems gradually being reinstalled.

We look forward to sharing more next month!

PUFFIN 50 “SEABEAR” READY FOR A NEW SEASON

At VMG Yachtbuilders, there is almost always a Puffin at the yard. The series is designed by Olivier van Meer Design and built by VMG Yachtbuilders, so these yachts are always a familiar part of our work.

Puffin 50 “SeaBear” was sold through Yachtfull International to her current owner in 2023 and came to VMG Yachtbuilders straight after the sale for a complete refit. This past winter, she returned to our yard for a number of smaller works.

She came in for two main points. The first was the patented keel construction, a characteristic feature of the Olivier van Meer design. This defining part of the yacht was inspected, cleaned and painted again, so it is in good condition for many more years of use. We also fully cleaned the drinking water tank and applied a coating.

The most substantial part of the work was on top of the coachroof. The teak on the coachroof was removed completely. To make this possible, the hatches and dorades first had to be dismantled and taken off the deck. Once everything was removed, the complete coachroof surface was sanded down, repaired where needed, and then primed and painted again. After that, the hatches were placed back and the deck details were rebuilt.

With these works completed, “SeaBear” was brought back into fresh condition once again. After her time inside our facilities, she was launched, the mast was stepped again, the sails were put back on, and she was made ready for a new season on the water!

Happy to see this beautiful yacht is sold! We wish her and her new crew Fair Winds and Following Seas! 🍾🥂⚓️⛵️
