“There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments.” — Janet Kilburn Phillips

This quote resonates quite loudly to those with green thumbs. Even if you do not have a green thumb, gardening is still challenging. Not only do you have to worry whether the sun is too hot, you overwatered, if fertiliser is need etc.

In short, it can be thumb bitingly worrisome but if you prefer to take it slow and easy, here’s a great guaranteed-can-survive hack anybody can do – https://says.com/my/lifestyle/easy-plants-tips-on-how-to-give-them-the-love-they-need-in-malaysian-weather. The best part? It’s tailormade for our Malaysian weather ;)

Created by Bag Free Day, this is an unofficial day that promotes environmental conservation by encouraging people to reject the use of plastic bags.

There are several ways to celebrate this day but we think the most fun is to create your very own cloth bag to replace the use of plastic bags. It might be a hassle if you’re not very handy with the sewing machine but it sure can’t beat the thrill of having your very own customised cloth bag.

Visit https://www.instructables.com/Easy-Cloth-Tote-Bag/ for step by step instructions.

“Cruelty ever proceeds from a vile mind, and often from a cowardly heart” - Lodovico Ariosto

Last June, a shocking incident happened in Kerala, India. A pregnant elephant had strayed in a village in search of food. Unfortunately, a firecracker was implanted in one of the pineapples one of the villagers had fed her with. It blew up in her mouth seriously injuring her tongue and mouth.

Worried about her unborn calf, the female elephant stayed in the river to drink water as it could no longer eat. It was to also keep away flies and any other insects away from her injuries. Unfortunately, all attempts to save her and her calf failed.

From this, it can be seen that there is misconception about how important animals are to ecologically balancing ecosystems. Simply wiping out one will affect the circle of life, causing severe implications to happen. To know why, find out more at https://theimportantsite.com/10-reasons-why-wildlife-is-important/.

Owning a pet is a heavy responsibility all pet lovers and potential pet owners face.

But when a decision has been made, instead of buying from pet shops, what about adopting? There are many cats and dogs in pet shelters nationwide waiting to be picked up by their forever mummy or daddy.

Adopting and not buying will not only give the pets a new lease of life but also help ease the shelter’s operations and allow them to take in more strays as the shelter’s occupancy lowers.

If you’re interested, visit https://waggymeal.com/blogs/resource-centre/malaysias-pet-adoption-centers to see if any of these shelters are near you.

Plastic pollution is one of the major causes of environmental damage and a bane to marine life. Over 1 million marine animals are harmed each year by the plastic debris in the ocean. They either assume that the debris around them are food or the debris wounds around them as they swim past, eventually killing them.

Every little action we take when combined together will become significant. This is especially so if we practise the 3Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle.

If you still feel stubborn and lazy, then watch the videos in https://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/10-heartbreaking-videos-of-sea-animals-harmed-by-plastic-pollution/. Search your conscience and imagine if it was you in their place.

While some of these hard to watch, it's important to see the effects of human actions on these poor animals and work towards making positive for them.

When it comes to food colouring, will you think of using “natural food colouring” instead of artificial ones?

You will be surprised to know there are some commonly found ingredients in the home that can do the trick.

Here are some suggestions you can use that are au naturel:
- Pink: Strawberries, raspberries
- Red: beets, tomatoes
- Orange: carrots, paprika, sweet potatoes
- Yellow: saffron, turmeric
- Green: matcha, spinach
- Blue: red cabbage + baking soda
- Purple: blueberries, purple sweet potatoes
- Brown: coffee, tea, cocoa
- Black: activated charcoal, squid ink

Every 23rd May is World Turtle Day. Started in 2000 by the American Tortoise Rescue, it is meant to bring attention to and increase knowledge of and respect for turtles and tortoises.

Turtles and tortoises are adorably cute and have a long history of being seen as symbols of strength, power, knowledge, immortality and fertility. But it is also because of this that they are increasingly being dangerously threatened like the Yangtze giant softshell turtle with only 3 known individuals left in the world.

There are many ways to show our support for our little friends like contributing to our local turtle or tortoise conservation NGO but in the meantime, do catch up with our little friends’ cute antics at https://www.facebook.com/WorldTurtleDay/

Climate change is difficult to imagine with many thinking they are not really impacted much unless they experience it themselves.

To help recreate the different possible scenarios, try these set of games at https://climatekids.nasa.gov/menu/play/. Aside from providing an element of fun, we hope these games can help teach what it means to reduce, reuse and recycle.
