If your kitchen area is small, consider installing a galley kitchen. A galley kitchen is a long, narrow kitchen that has bottom cabinets, wall cabinets and counters located on one or both sides of a central walkway. Reducing the area of a working triangle, the design is very functional that allows you to reach all areas of the kitchen with minimal walking distance. Maximising storage properties, the kitchen work triangle will often fit naturally into the design – meaning your fridge, sink and oven are conveniently close to each other. Having everything nearby also ensures the space is used efficiently, which is great for smaller homes with limited room.

Using a maximum of only two walls, the L-shaped kitchens offer an easy and efficient workspace and allow appliances & cabinets to be installed along right angled walls with an open area in the centre. The open concept layout makes small kitchens appear wider and countertops & cabinets can be adjusted to length of your space. It allows for more entries and exits, making the movement from zone to zone very quickly. Workflow is easily organized in a L-shaped kitchen with each station (preparation, cooking, cleaning) placed strategically in your kitchen area.

The U-shaped kitchen is great for high-efficiency cooking and is the perfect example of the work triangle - the workflow between the sink, stove and refrigerator is smoother. The U-shaped layout is often considered to be the most efficient kitchen because of its tight working triangle and floor plan. One great benefit of a U-shaped kitchen is that two or more cooks can operate at the same time - ideal when you have a big family to feed! The layout also helps to keep traffic out and makes all appliances easily accessible.

Overhead lighting is a go-to option in many spaces, but you forget about where shadows might fall. Place a light in the wrong spot, and you could create more of a problem than a solution. What you need to remember is shadows can plague your kitchen workspace too. If kitchen lights are positioned above the edge of the counter, when you stand at the counter to work, you cast a shadow exactly where you need the light. Kitchen Lighting 101: Solve this problem by installing under-cabinet lighting.

How about lighting colours? Warm white or cool white? While warm white gives off that cozy, casual vibe and works great if you are looking for softer light, but cool white looks great in modern kitchens and where the brighter the better. We always suggest to opt for cool white LEDs as it tends to give a cleaner look, perfect for modern kitchens.

In conjunction with the Festival of Lights, shares how to light up your kitchen and dining area.

The first things to consider are the scene you want to create, the emotion you are looking for, what kind of lighting will complement your personal style, and your home’s existing décor.

Kitchen lighting is an important factor to the function and comfort level of the space. You will need lighting to carry out tasks like food preparation and cooking.

Recessed lights are typically used in a kitchen: 1. Use it for general lighting; 2. Brighten up entire space and make it an appealing and inviting place to work and socialize in. 3. Mood lighting that helps highlight kitchen cabinets, special collections and counter spaces.

On dining, we have to admit that the dining room is not just for eating – it’s a multi-functional space - for homework, paying bills, playing games, and other tasks. Providing sufficient light at the table and around the room is key. A chandelier or pendant light fixture is usually used to scale down the distance with food on the table so the dishes become the focus and ultimately increase appetite.
