ohr We are a structural engineering consultancy that was founded on principles of creative and collaborative approach to engineering. And we have fun while at it.

We enjoy working together with our client and project team in arriving at solutions. We have worked with pneumatic structures, timber, perspex, masonry, to name a few non conventional structural materials. And have worked with plenty of conventional ones too. We are one of the few in Malaysia who are able to undertake timber engineering. Our understanding of design, materials and construction allo

ws us to study and work on existing buildings. The way we work, at ohr we say, engineer it differently.

Our monthly dialogue is back.

We’ve been meeting monthly to sharpen our critical thinking. This month marks our 5th session of Frame of Thoughts and registration is now open.

This month’s topic: Why Workplace Communication Breaks Down?

It is a free event, with places limited to 15 participants. Registration is required, use the QR code in the poster.

Come and join us and share your thoughts!

An update on Frame of Thoughts, as we had just opened the session to the public for the first time last Thursday.

What began as a small trial session in January has quietly grown into a recurring space for thoughtful conversation across different backgrounds and industries.
Over the past months, we’ve had participants from engineering, construction, sustainability, education, and more — each bringing very different perspectives into the room.

Some of the topics we’ve explored so far:
• Do Opinions Come From Thinking… Or Experience?
• When Friendship Changes, What Stays?
• What Does Success Mean If Nobody Is Watching?

Frame of Thoughts remains a casual, peer-led discussion space rather than a lecture or panel.

Thank you to everyone who has participated, contributed, and helped shape the conversations so far.
The next session will be announced soon.

We are launching a new quarterly series, The Load Path, starting with our first session:

Lateral Stability of Buildings – The Fundamentals

This session sets out the core principles behind lateral stability in buildings — what it is, why it matters increasingly in Malaysia, and how it is addressed in structural design. We will cover structural systems, load effects, and the practical design considerations that underpin stable and efficient buildings.

Format: Webinar (1 hour)
Date: Thursday, 16 April 2026
Time: 19:30
Platform: Microsoft Teams

This is the first of a quarterly series aimed at strengthening understanding of fundamental engineering principles.

Attendance is free. Registration via QR code in the poster.

We are launching The Load Path, a new quarterly series under Ohr Transform focused on strengthening fundamental engineering understanding.

This is a small step towards improving the quality and consistency of how we approach design.

If this aligns with your work, I hope you will find the series useful.

Together with Ar. Edric Choo Poo Liang of O2DA + CPLA, we presented a guest lecture on adaptive reuse to kick off this year's Capstone Project for Monash University Malaysia's School of Civil Engineering.

Edric discussed the architectural perspective and the importance of collaborating with engineers, referencing their work on Sentul Works Gallery. Yasotha Chetty provided an overview of structural engineering approaches crucial for adaptive reuse.

Well done Monash on organising this joint architecture and structural engineering lecture. We look forward to more such cross-discipline events!

Here is what Yue He, who is currently interning with us, has to share about our visit to Archidex 2024:

It was an eye-opening experience for me as an intern. Here are my biggest takeaways:

1. Permeable paving like Hydro Pave reduces stormwater runoff and enhances groundwater recharge, providing me with an understanding of urban stormwater management.
2. The use of 4D BIM construction demonstrated how detailed such modeling can be.
3. Timber and bamboo structures showcased sustainable advancements in construction.
4. Various exhibits on Industrialised Building Systems and modular construction offered insights into alternative structural solutions.
5. Exposure to forensic engineering concepts and technologies like the Xradar concrete scanner for investigating reinforced concrete structures.

Recap from Archidex 2024! Last week, we explored the latest architectural innovations at Malaysia's top trade show. As we do every year, here's why structural engineers should prioritize such events:

Stay ahead: Architectural trade shows showcase emerging trends and technologies impacting structural design and construction practices.

Effective collaboration: Understanding architectural materials helps us speak the language to communicate effectively with architects and the wider design team, ensuring seamless integration of structural and design elements.

Innovation hub: Discovering new materials and methodologies inspires innovative approaches to engineering challenges, enhancing project sustainability and efficiency.

At Ohr, we're committed to continuous learning and staying at the forefront of industry advancements. Explore how these insights shape our approach to engineering excellence. Visit our website (link in bio) for more.

When undertaking projects on challenging terrains, it is crucial to account for geographical constraints, logistics, buildability, and environmental impact when positioning buildings and designing access networks. For a hillside development we are currently working on, we employed Dynamo and Python in conjunction with Civil 3D to optimise these factors from the outset, producing studies that facilitate seamless collaboration between our engineers, architects, the broader design team, and the client.
