Bathrooms are always challenging to renovate, particularly in new high-rise buildings where plumbing lines are cast into concrete floors and difficult to relocate.

Fortunately, we were able to reroute the plumbing through walls and ceilings, allowing us to reconfigure the sink placement. Shown here, variegated blush quartzite sinks are paired with custom-height mirrored vanities and crystal ball pendant fixtures that echo the scale and rhythm of the surrounding architecture.
Walls and floors are finished in hand-troweled cement, creating a warm, softly variegated surface. Custom floating cabinetry, detailed with integrated underlighting, keeps the space feeling open while providing a subtle night light in the evening.

We were also able to introduce a substantial partition wall between the private toilet and shower, maximizing usable space and incorporating much-needed storage. Designed to feel like original architectural elements, these additions enhance both function and flow within the bathroom.

In New York City, space is a luxury, so every inch must work beautifully. This primary bedroom is layered in warm taupe and blush tones, creating a calm, cohesive retreat. By shifting the entry door, we transformed three small closets into one fully customized, full-height storage wall with mirrored, upholstered, and lacquered doors, maximizing function without sacrificing elegance. Linen-and-silk damask panels are echoed in the full-height drapery, while the palette continues seamlessly into the primary bath, enhancing the sense of openness and flow.

Over the course of a year and a half, we traveled throughout Mexico in search of inspiration and the skilled craftspeople who would become collaborators on the Mictlán Collection. These encounters shaped both the design language and materiality of the work, guided by serendipity, tradition, and exchange.

On one such journey, we visited Hotel Hércules and Cara Larga Studio in Querétaro, spaces where design, craft, and history intersect. Their architecture, textures, and the artisans behind them informed the collection’s relationship to place, ritual, and living craft.

The Mictlán Collection, designed and crafted in Mexico, is rooted in Mexica cosmology and the pre-Hispanic tradition of cartonería, forms that predate and parallel the later piñata rituals of Mesoamerica, including those honoring Huitzilopochtli.

Hand-sculpted from reinforced cartonería, volcanic stone, and natural fibers, the Mictlán Lounge Chair and Side Tables explore the relationship between form, ritual, and the natural world. Together they embody themes of transformation, duality, and ancestral continuity.

The Mictlan Collection is honored to be exhibited within the context of the MAP Museum (Museo de Arte Popular) in Mexico City, an institution dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and dignification of Mexican handcrafts and folk traditions.

Each piece embodies a dialogue between mythology and material, memory and form, bearing the imprint of both ancestral narratives and the physical terrains that inspired its creation. In aligning with the MAP Museum’s mission, the collection situates itself at the intersection of cultural continuity and contemporary interpretation, honoring craft not only as a medium of production but as a living archive of collective identity.

The Mictlán Collection is a series of functional furniture-sculptures that celebrate Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and artisanal traditions. Bridging the ancient and the contemporary, the collection integrates natural, sustainable, and recycled materials in unexpected and poetic ways, balancing structure and softness to create expressive, sculptural forms.
Each work is realized through a hybrid of natural fibers, recycled paper, resin-reinforced cartonería, and chiseled volcanic stone, drawing on Mesoamerican traditions of piñata-making and stone carving. These humble materials are transformed into tactile, emotionally resonant sculptural forms, evoking the texture and weight of ground bone, memory, and earth, where materiality becomes a vessel for cultural continuity and embodied myth.
