Italy, on the contrary, is an almost modern country... The style suddenly becomes exquisite, and the mind is suddenly mature. When one passes from the tedious hexameters and ponderously presumptuous epistles of Petrarch to the elegant couplets of Policiano or the eloquent prose of Valla, one feels penetrated by an almost physical pleasure."

1933. Juan Legarreta, Pragmatic Summary, Mexico City.

PRAGMATIC summary of the lecture given by Juan Legarreta at the S.A.M. on [date missing] of 1933.

"The people who live in shacks and round rooms cannot speak of architecture.
-We build houses for the people.
-Aesthetes and rhetoricians—may they all die. -They'll have their arguments later." Juan Legarreta, 1933.

The “Talks on Architecture” in 1933 provided a space for open debate on the future of Mexican architecture in the face of the arrival of the Modern Movement. The discussion raised remains relevant today: Where is Mexican architecture headed? For the eleven participants in the talks in 1933, there was no clear answer (Topelson, 2001, p. 6). Juan Legarreta's “Talk” is one of the few remaining handwritten lines, as he returned the lines that were published when the revised version of his lecture was sent to him (Pallares, 1934).

"The meaning of an established system of signs can change through transformations and ultimately lead to its destruction. Wines's hallucinatory exercises in 'de-architecturalization' with friezes on the verge of collapse, carefully designed and painstakingly constructed ruins, mimic the aftermath of a natural disaster. The allure of the designs lies in the perversion of intentional signs."
