🤔 MANY CUSTOMERS ASK HALLO: "Do air conditioners in Japan use 100V or 200V electricity?"
❄️ This is actually a very common question, especially for people who have recently moved to Japan or are buying an air conditioner for the first time. Many assume that all air conditioners use the same type of electricity, but things are a little different in Japan...
🇯🇵 Most residential electricity in Japan is 100V.
However, air conditioners are generally divided into two categories:
✅ Small-capacity air conditioners (typically for rooms of 6 to 10 tatami)
→ Most of them use 100V power.
✅ Large-capacity air conditioners (typically for rooms of 12, 14, 18 tatami and above)
→ Most of them use 200V power.
🤔 Why is that?
Simply put, when an air conditioner has a larger cooling capacity, running it on 100V would require a much higher electrical current. This can put more strain on the wiring and reduce overall efficiency.
👉 That's why Japanese manufacturers often design larger air conditioners to operate on 200V, allowing them to run more efficiently, cool faster, and perform more reliably.
💡 So how do you know if your home can use a 200V air conditioner?
Many people think that if there is already an air conditioner outlet, any unit can be installed. In reality, several factors need to be checked:
✔️ The voltage supplied to the installation location
✔️ The type of circuit breaker
✔️ The capacity of the electrical wiring
✔️ The outlet and plug configuration
In some cases, the electrical system must be converted from 100V to 200V before installation.
👉 This is why HalloJapan always checks the installation conditions and electrical specifications before recommending a model to our customers.
❄️ The right air conditioner isn't just about keeping the room cool...
It should also match your room size, electrical system, and your family's needs.
✅ If you're not sure what size air conditioner your room needs or whether you should choose a 100V or 200V model, simply send HalloJapan your room size or a photo of your current air conditioner outlet.
We'll be happy to help you choose the right unit, save money, and avoid unnecessary issues after installation. 😊
