Message in the Medium.

Dear friends and visitors! I’ve finally got an FB page for my business, and to reveal my experiences working with the wonderful, inspiring, tireless medium of wood. I hope that you visit on occasion, and find something to enjoy or learn from, if not to comment on or order!

My long experience and honor has been to learn from wood, as much as I appear to be using and manipulating this diverse medium. We obviously mold it to our will, but it is also truthful to say that, if observant, we are molded by it. I have learned much about the character of wood especially from working for over 20 years in Japan. The shokunin (professional craftsmen) here betray their long tradition of being able to “read” wood, how to work it according to the nature of growth rings and grain, and how to select wood for given applications. (This information I have written and published in Woodwork magazine, Aug. 2004, and Dec., 2011, called, Getting Your Fiber).

From here on I look forward to writing, photographing, and corresponding on this ancient and yet unending subject of woodworking and furniture making. Please contact me with requests, comments, or questions. Best regards, Russell Hiroshi Jokela
