The first piece out of the furnace is never the right one.
That is exactly what a prototype is for: to fail early, understand where, and start again. And again, until the shape stops being an idea and becomes an object that stands on its own.
How many attempts does it take? It depends. Never one.

A new piece always begins "on paper", and almost never ends the way it started.
Between the first drawing and the final form there are weeks of corrections: a thickness that will not hold, a proportion that works on paper and not in glass. Glass always has the last word.
We are working on something. For a little longer, it stays between us.

Some forms do not belong to a single era: they transcend it.

In the Salviati archive, essential lines and historic designs become a source of inspiration for contemporary objects, capable of inhabiting different spaces without losing their identity.

The “Sassi” collection by Luciano Gaspari is a perfect example:

Salviati works are held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan in New York.
But part of its history is not in display cases. It is in ceilings: a twenty-two metre, nine-tonne chandelier in Parma; the luminous ceiling of WIPO in Geneva; the sound-absorbing glass of the Aula Nervi in the Vatican.

Those projects are where Salviati Contract began: modular solutions for architecture, made by the same hands that make a drinking glass.

In 1859 the art of Murano glassmaking was in decline, and Venetian mosaic had all but vanished, surviving only within the walls of the Vatican.
Antonio Salviati — a lawyer, chemist and archaeologist — decided both could be brought back. A year later, he brought his work to London—specifically to St Paul’s Cathedral and the Central Lobby of the Palace of Westminster—before taking it to Paris and, eventually, around the world.
Less known: Salviati set up an in-house drawing school, and a free school where his workers were taught to read and write. He wanted his glass masters to feel like authors, not executors.
One hundred and sixty-five years later, it is still how we work.
