Memphis Milano

Memphis Milano ITALIAN RADICAL DESIGN® Memphis Milano is the great cultural phenomenon of the ‘80s that has revolutionised the idea of the design world.

Created on the initiative of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young Milanese architects and designers. The Memphis movement became the almost mythical symbol of the New Design. The last collection by the Memphis group was designed in 1988.

Tahiti by Ettore Sottsass, as seen by Alecio Ferrari and Danila Saulino. Milan-based photographer Alecio Ferrari and architect Danila Saulino reinterpret Tahiti almost as a fantastical presence: a pale pink face, a canary-yellow neck, a vivid red beak. Through their visual language, this poetic object reveals its playful and surreal nature, suspended somewhere between design, creature and narrative.

Part of As Seen By, a photographic project exploring Memphis through new visual languages.

With the Memphis people again: in a fully Memphis furnished apartment, we had a chat with Aldo Cibic! In the background, his unique Castilian bookshelf. The renowned architect and designer saw the creation of Memphis in 1981 and, like the rest of the group, had a special bond with Ettore Sottsass. He told us this story and many anecdotes from every era of his career. Join this amazing journey.

Carlton: the Memphis Milano masterpiece that breaks all the rules of design. Designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1981, this bookshelf is a burst of color, personality, and pure audacity in Kalei’s townhouse. Playful, striking, and impossible to ignore, it’s a true head-turner that transforms our space into a bold expression of creativity.

With the Memphis people again: for Marco Zanini, you cannot choose just one Memphis piece as your favorite. The brand is about experimenting and creating new frontiers of design, especially when you have the opportunity to follow extraordinary manual processes like the hand making of glassware in Murano. The story becomes more and more fascinating.

Memphis at the Radical Home: from the studio to the “listening room”, the revolution continues. Along with the masterpieces from the Eighties by authors such as Ettore Sottsass and Michele De Lucchi, here is the new gem: a new, smaller version of Tawaraya Ring by the great Masanori Umeda.

A new home, the Radical Home: this is the space where Memphis contributes to create a new way of living. The monumental yet functional Suvretta, the legendary Casablanca, the imposing Hyatt by Ettore Sottsass, as well as all the other masterpieces by names like Michele De Lucchi and Nathalie Du Pasquier; an impeccable way to show the timeless beauty of Memphis in a domestic space.

In Memphis’ catalogue, you can find monumental pieces as well as some smaller gems. When exhibitions like Salone del Mobile, coming soon this month, are planned, the brand gives both categories the same importance. Here are the refined, delicate, elegant porcelains by Matteo Thun: Manitoba, Ontario, Erie, Superior and Michigan. Anti-functional and “emotional objects” which contribute to making Memphis always and perpetually unique.
