ITALIAN RADICAL DESIGN® Memphis Milano is the great cultural phenomenon of the ‘80s that has revolutionised the idea of the design world.

Created on the initiative of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young Milanese architects and designers. The Memphis movement became the almost mythical symbol of the New Design. The last collection by the Memphis group was designed in 1988.

At Artizon Museum アーティゾン美術館 in Tokyo, you can visit an incredible retrospective about Ettore Sottsass until October, 4th. In this exhibition, the Japanese museum pays tribute to the author through a great selection of Memphis masterpieces, from ethereal Murano Glassware to bold Carlton and Casablanca.

Small, yet monumental: Euphrates by Ettore Sottsass has bizarre forms, shaped in white porcelain with a single touch of color. The form of the traditional ceramic vase is broken down and reassembled with interlocking parts, in an unstable balance. The effect is paradoxical and dynamic.

With the Memphis people again: Aldo Cibic's imprint on the catalogue of Memphis is unmistakable. Among his several creations, he told us everything about the elegant Castilian, designed in 1984. The bookcase seems like a primitive diagram, enhanced by the vivacious colors and patterns typical of Memphis.

Hyatt by Ettore Sottsass, as seen by Louis De Belle.

Milan-based photographer Louis De Belle captures Hyatt as a lively protagonist of contemporary living. Originally designed in 1984 for Ettore Sottsass’ Milan home, this small table embodies Memphis’ radical vision of design as an emotional and cultural gesture. Through the photographer’s original gaze, Hyatt moves fluidly across atmospheres, rituals, and identities while preserving its unmistakable contemporary force.
