Title: Inquiry into Truth - Summary of L&V 2.10
In this last discussion on Vedanta and Life (L&V 2.10), we conclud the topic of how to inquire into the Truth. It began with the question: "What is the inquiry into the Truth?" The answer lies in recognizing that the Self is real, while everything other than the Self is unreal.
The Truth:
The essence of Truth lies in discriminating between the Real and the unreal. The Real (Sat) remains unchanged across all time periods, unaffected by any conditions or perspectives. It is constant and eternal, similar to the words of a noble person that stand the test of time.
On the contrary, the unreal (mithya) cannot be defined as either real or non-existent. If something exists and is experienced but undergoes constant change, it is considered unreal. The world, although experienced, is negated by time and experience, making it unreal. Furthermore, what we perceive is merely an appearance and not the actual reality.
The Truth-Real is the underlying foundation upon which the Untrue-Unreal appears to exist.
Discriminating between the Self and the not-Self:
Life consists of two aspects: 'I' (the experiencer of the world) and the world (the experienced). While the name, form, quality, and experiences of objects in the world constantly change, the experiencer ('I') remains constant. 'I' is always present, while the world is negated with every thought. Hence, 'I' alone is real, and everything else apart from 'I' is unreal.
However, we mistakenly identify ourselves with the Body-Mind-Intellect (B-M-I), which are constantly changing and deceptive.
Masters adopt the method of negating the superimposition to understand the Self fully. By negating the not-Self entirely, we discover the pure Self, the substratum, the ultimate Truth.
This leads us to the natural question in the mind of a Mumukshu (a qualified seeker of this knowledge): "What is the Self?" The answer is that the Self is beyond the gross, subtle, and causal bodies, transcending the five sheaths. It is the witness of the three states of consciousness and embodies Existence-Consciousness-Bliss.
In today's discussion, Jagdish sir attempted to explain the aforementioned question, as previously elucidated by Gurudev.
