New 10.5” and 12.9” iPads to hit the shelves in May or June

Everyone expected Apple to announce three new iPads in the beginning of 2017 but it looks like we might need to wait a little longer. We already heard Apple tablets will arrive in the summer and now new reports confirm that info - the 10.5” and 12.9” iPad will arrive in May.

Insiders from TPK Holding, Foxconn and General Interface Solution spoke of delayed production and release of three new iPads. The plan for Apple was to announce a 9.7” entry-level iPad with A9 CPU, a new 10.5” iPad and an upgraded 12.9” iPad Pro, the latter two powered by the upgraded A10X.

As for what we can expect with the new iPads, an investor note from KGI claimed that the 12.9” iPad Pro would be an iterative update over the first generation model. The spotlight will actually be reserved for the new 10.5” device with narrow bezels and thus similar in size to the 9.7”.

The Cupertino-based company sold 42.5 million iPads last year in shrinking market and the long-awaited launch could boost the numbers for Apple.

Motorola announces which of its devices will get Android 6.0 updates

Since Android 6.0 Marshmallow will officially make its debut next week when it will land on Google's Nexus line of devices, Motorola thought it fitting to publish a blog post outlining its plans regarding Marshmallow updates. It's unfortunate that in this day and age very few smartphone makers are so upfront about their update strategies.

As you'd expect, Motorola has published a list of its devices that are going to get updates to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Yet you might not have expected the list to be this short, or for certain handsets to be missing from it.

Apple’s look for the iPhone 6S has been leaked and along with the photos, five new details have also been revealed about the upcoming smartphone. As you can see from the pictures, case and accessory manufacturers won’t have to go back to the drawing board for this one since the design is largely the same from the outside.

The casing of the iPhone 6S has the same width and depth as the current model. It’s highly possible that the good old 4.7-inch screen will make a repeat appearance on the new handset. But there’s no confirmation on how the bigger 5.5-inch 6S Plus will turn out.

Secondly, Apple doesn’t seem to have moved around the connectors or microphones. And there was never much hope of the company swapping the Lightning port for a USB-C one in the first place. Even the speaker holes stay the same and are lined along the bottom of the iPhone 6S.

The third detail which has been revealed through the images published by 9to5Mac, has to do with the insides of the forthcoming iPhone. Even though the smartphone may fool you into thinking that it’s identical to the iPhone 6 from the outside, its internal mounting structure has been redesigned.

Apple was seen applying for a patent so that it could do away with the antenna lines on the back of its iOS handsets. This hasn’t translated into the design of the iPhone 6S, according to the images. It’s a matter of opinion of course, but the lines prevent the phone from appearing too stark.

Lastly, there were unconfirmed stories about Apple adopting a dual lens camera system for the iPhone 6S. You’ll notice that the leaked photographs betray no hint of such a setup. The three holes for the camera, microphone and LED flash unit are exactly where they are supposed to be.

HTC is presently the only big mobile phone brand which uses such a feature in some of its handsets. Apple bought Linx, an Israeli camera tech company, for $20 million to explore the possibility of using its multi-lens system to deliver SLR-level quality photography in its iPhone devices.

Another bit of information that cannot be backed by the leaked pictured has to do with the touchscreen on the Apple iPhone 6S. The company uses Force Touch pressure-sensitive haptic feedback for the displays of its smartwatch and 12-inch MacBook, to trigger multiple functions.

There’s a chance that this technology may make it to the next generation iPhone 6S. We’ll know more about the device as we get closer to September 2015, the month in which Apple is expected to launch its new handset.

My Must-have iPad list has changed over the years, in part because how I use my iPad has changed. The biggest shift came in the last six months, when I went from carrying the iPad 3 to making the iPad mini my primary tablet. The iPad 3 stays at home, and it is still the better device for movies, Web browsing, and reading digital magazines. The iPad mini goes wherever I do, however; from the commute in on the PATH train, to my morning news meeting, to lunch, the iPad mini is always within reach. This new use case is pretty common and it requires rethinking what is—and is not—an Essential iPad App.

Spotify, which last week announced 60 million users (15 million paying) worldwide, is announcing an upgrade to its Windows Phone app that it hopes will get more owners of Microsoft-powered mobile phones to use its streaming music service. The new app features a slicker-looking black-colored theme, alongside (finally) the appearance of Spotify’s “Your Music” feature to let users save albums and tracks to their collections, as well as its updated Browse feature.

Independent mobile network tester RootMetrics has completed its latest round of nationwide speed and reliability tests, and while the best overall performance award goes to Verizon, the speed prize that most tech geeks really care about was a bit of toss-up. Both Verizon and T-Mobile posted impressive 4G bandwidth numbers, reflecting big upgrades both made to their LTE networks in the last year.
