Gangamma Thalli – Grama Devatha and the Legacy of the Thippana Family
Gangamma Thalli is the revered Grama Devatha (village goddess) worshipped by the Thippana family and the villagers of Obili. She is believed to be a divine protector who brings strength, health, prosperity, and shields the village from evil forces. Her presence is central to the cultural and spiritual life of the community.
Temple History and Reconstruction
The original Gangamma Thalli temple was built by the ancestors of the Thippana family using mud and stones, following ancient traditions. In recent years, the Thippana family took full responsibility for the reconstruction of the temple using bricks, sand, cement, and also added electrical wiring for lighting—ensuring that the sanctity of the original structure remained untouched.
To support devotees further, the Thippana family also laid a new road leading to the temple, making it easily accessible for pilgrims and villagers.
The completion of the temple reconstruction was celebrated with a grand opening ceremony, during which a Dunnapothu (male buffalo) was offered to Ammavaru (the goddess) as part of the sacred rituals.
Challah Festival – A Unique Village Ritual
The Challah Festival is one of the most heartfelt and traditional events connected to Gangamma Thalli, celebrated annually with deep devotion.
Every household contributes offerings, including:
Curd rice
Buttermilk
Onions
Green chilies
These items are brought to the temple and poured into three sacred pots following a special pooja.
After the ritual, the food is distributed among all devotees, who eat together on the temple grounds.
A key tradition is that no one leaves the temple until everyone has finished eating. All devotees exit together as one group, symbolizing unity, equality, and shared blessings from the goddess.
This sacred practice reinforces the spirit of togetherness and devotion within the community.
