It was more than 13 years back. I came across a group of handloom weavers in Tanjore, Tamilnadu. They were weaving cotton saris. Their story sounded familiar. -"Cotton handloom sari market has crashed, we have no work and are forced to migrate"-. Then one of them brought me a worn out, old business card. This was given by someone from The Netherlands who visited them a few years back. Moved by their story and inspired by the beauty of the saris they wove, he offered to help by finding some alternate market for their products back in the Netherlands. He had only one condition, as no one wears saris in the Netherlands they have to weave something that he can sell. The weaver then asked me if I can help to connect with the visitor and help figure what other products they can weave.

I could not help them then, but that meeting left a spark. Handloom weaving is a timeless skill. We have to find what to make with it that the modern customers want and appreciate.

More than a decade later, ROPE now employs more than 100 handloom weavers who weave the most exquisite mats, runners and blinds that go all over the world. Some of these weavers were weaving sleeping mats long back and were deprived of their livelihoods when plastic sleeping mats conquered the market. We are not doing any favours to the weavers. We are fortunate to use their skills to create new markets through contemporary product development.
