This teak cabinet, from the 1920s/30s is in the style of Parisian cabinetmakers like Gabriel Viardot, who specialized in “Chinese-Japanese style” furniture (Japonisme). This is seen in the openwork carvings, stylized scroll feet, and the “Ru Yi” designs on the lower shelf. Following the opening of trade with Japan in the 1850s, European designers became fascinated with Asian aesthetics, leading to a hybrid style that blended traditional European furniture forms with Eastern decorative elements.
The upper section has a vitrine or display cabinet with glass-panelled doors and internal shelves, topped with a decorative pierced fret gallery. The lower section is a console or foyer table featuring a single wide drawer with brass pulls and a bottom shelf with Ru Yi (Chinese sceptre) motifs, a symbol of good fortune and longevity.
Historically cabinets like this were used to store sheet music or small instruments but in more contemporary contexts are often used for displaying religious idols or items. The piece can also be used as a decorative statement piece for hallways to display collectibles and store small essentials. Size height; 64.5”, width 29”, depth 16”.
