Handcrafted wooden objects made in Israel

L’Atelier is a fine woodworking studio in Afula, Israel, founded and run by Judith Nusimovici, a French-born and trained craftswoman who made Aliyah in 2017. After years of honing her skills in traditional European techniques, Judith established her workshop in the Jezreel Valley, where she creates handmade Judaica, bespoke furniture, and refined home accessories that blend the precision of French

Art Deco with the clarity of minimalist design. Her work is distinguished by the use of quality solid wood and veneers, combined with the rare and luminous art of rye straw marquetry. Each piece is carefully crafted by hand, balancing timeless elegance with functionality, and designed to become an heirloom that reflects both tradition and contemporary living. The spirit of L’Atelier is deeply personal: Judith is the sole designer and maker, working from start to finish on every commission, with the quiet company of her loyal dog in the studio. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Afula, she draws inspiration from her multicultural journey , a childhood in France, her training in fine European woodworking, and her life in Israel since making Aliyah. L’Atelier welcomes fine furniture restoration as well as custom orders, inviting clients to collaborate in shaping pieces that embody refinement, heritage, and modern design.

To glue or not to glue…

Ask any woodworker, glue-up is pure stress. You dry-fit everything perfectly, then the glue goes on, nothing stays square, and the clock is ticking. It is certainly not the moment you want to hear a siren and be forced to drop everything!

Apparently, there is an app in Israel to calculate if you have time to shower before a siren, we clearly need one for glue-ups! Until then, I am focusing on smaller projects that allow for a bit more breathing room.

These handmade solid wood matzah plates may have missed this year’s Seder table, but they are ready for many years to come.

• Dimensions: Fits standard 7” square matzah.
• Versatility: Can also serve as a napkin holder (includes a matching wooden weight).
• Unique: Each piece from the studio is one-of-a-kind.

If you like to plan ahead, or are looking for a handmade piece for future holidays, feel free to reach out or visit the shop:

Wishing you a meaningful and peaceful holiday, wherever you are.

Official announcement from the real boss of L’Atelier

Hello, I’m Sasha.
Given the current situation, my helper is somewhat sleep-deprived, can't really focus and seems to find it more fun to run to shelter than go to the workshop... In her absence, I am taking the opportunity to set the record straight and properly inform the public about who truly runs this establishment.

While Judith, my woodworker, likes to think she runs L’Atelier, let us be clear: I am the heart of operations. She may handle tools, wood and logistics… but I am the muse. The guardian of quiet, warm, elegant aesthetics. The silent supervisor of every line, every curve, every refined wooden surface.

My executive responsibilities include:
• Material Softness Analysis: Testing the ergonomics of various sleeping corners (extensive daily research).
• Quality Control Naps: Ensuring our wood meets the rigorous comfort standards required for deep thought.
• Antique Oversight: Personally, supervising the restoration of every heirloom piece.
• Security & Surveillance: Monitoring street activity to ensure the neighborhood remains as tranquil as our designs.
• Staff Wellness: Reminding my assistant (Judith) when it is time to go home. She tends to linger in the workshop a little too much. Her productivity is my priority.

All high-end modern wooden Judaica, home décor, and furniture created at L’Atelier are clearly infused with my calm presence and elevated taste. Judith may be the hands, but I am the standard.

Full production will resume once I approve nap conditions and my helper is cleared by Israeli home security to return to the workshop.
In the meantime, please note we accept commissions. Also, many of our most cherished pieces are made to order, and orders can already be placed, excellence does not pause. Please allow up to two weeks for production before shipping, once operations are back to normal.

Feel free to visit our website to find out more about me and our work (link in first comment and second comment)
With a dignified wag,

A tiny scroll upon the door
It gards our home, our heart, our core
To some it’s just wood or glass or clay
But to us it means we are here to stay
A mezuzah hangs; not loud yet proud,
And steady while the world grows loud
It’s seen wars, crusades, and stares, and fears
And still leans with hope through all these years
And while some people paint their walls
We mark our doors to remember who we are and so much more
Frum, traditional or even if you are Secular
We all have the shema showcased at every room
So, when we are asked “why not take it down?”
“Why wear your faith when there is so much hate?”
I just smile and say, “because I must as this little scroll holds all my trust,
It holds our parents’ whispered songs and our grandparents’ right to belong. It holds the words that they tried to ban and the importance of echoing: I am, I am.”
A mezuzah is small yet fierce and true. Protecting the very essence of being a Jew.
And each doorway marked is part of our unbroken and beating heart.
So, pass our doors, you’ll see it there.
A sign of hope and a whispered prayer. We may be few but we do stand tall.
For these small signs have seen it all.

This text is not mine, I believe it is , but maybe this is why I find it is so soothing to make mezuzah cases:

I just had the pleasure of completing this Art Deco–inspired commission for a client in Jerusalem. She had always dreamed of owning a piece of furniture decorated with straw marquetry, a centuries-old craft in which flattened rye straw is cut and arranged into shimmering geometric or pictorial designs.
Building this piece in these troubled times was not without its challenges. But working with straw meant I could keep going even while taking shelter in the safe room. There is nothing quite like the slow, meditative process of flattening straw to quiet the mind.
While my client had a very clear vision for the overall design, I suggested adding this 3D pattern inspired by French master , who reimagined the classic 18th-century cube sans fond parquetry, expanding it beyond cubes into new illusions.
I am currently developing a line of straw marquetry furniture and am open to commissions for both furniture and wall art. I also offer one-time workshops as an introduction to the craft.

This year has been such a complicated year for everyone.
Everything seems so futile to me in comparison to the unfathomable hell our hostages are going through, the agony of their families, the loss of our soldiers, and the grief of their families. Our lives are torn between different realms of reality—one minute dealing with day-to-day life for the lucky ones like me who haven't been displaced or called into the army, the next running for shelter or lying on the ground when not near enough to one.

The advantage of working with your hands is that it numbs the brain. I would like to share with you one of last year’s projects that brought comfort to my world.

May it be inscribed that this new year brings the release of all our hostages, the safe return of our soldiers, and a world that finally comes to its senses.

We sometimes need a little bit of poetry to help us through things
And that is what I am lucky to get in my work. Sometimes simply in the grain of the wood, or in the beauty of an ancestral technic but sometimes also in more modern builds. Where the purpose of the build is to bring out the beauty of something else.I really like that idea.
My client bought this old music box in the small artists' village of Ein Hod. He fell in love with it and I can see why. I had never seen such a box. And the sound is surprisingly good (nothing like the small boxes)
The request was simple: something black on which could sit the box and comportements to place the records. And most importantly the stand must be elegant yet not distract from the box.

In these trying times, I find comfort in making mezuzah cases. Focusing on small details numbs my mind. Carving out the shin reminds me not to lose faith. Even the grain in the maple wood tells me to keep believing.
My jointer is old yet sturdy and is here to stay, just like the nation it was built in.
Hoping for better days.
