We're proud to announce that Sunbula has won the 2026 JIAPICH (Jeonju International Award for Promoting Intangible Cultural Heritage) 🇵🇸🇰🇷

The award is sponsored by the City of Jeonju and CICS (International Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage Safeguarding for the Asia-Pacific Region) 무형문화연구원/The Center for Intangible Culture Studies. Jeonju, a historic city in South Korea, is renowned for its dedication to preserving intangible cultural heritage.

Sunbula was selected alongside two other winners from Sri Lanka and Colombia, out of a competitive pool of 125 applicants from around the world.

Sunbula's chairperson Ahed Izhiman and executive director Shirabe Yamada travelled to Jeonju, South Korea to receive this recognition and represent Palestine on the international stage.

For over 30 years, Sunbula has been supporting hundreds of artisans in keeping traditional embroidery and craft skills alive, and earning a livelihood from them.

تُقام هذه الجائزة برعاية مدينة جيونجو ومركز CICS (المركز الدولي لصون التراث الثقافي غير المادي لمنطقة آسيا والمحيط الهادئ). وتشتهر مدينة جيونجو، التاريخية في كوريا الجنوبية، بجهودها في الحفاظ على التراث الثقافي غير المادي.

تم اختيار سنبلة إلى جانب فائزَين آخرَين من سريلانكا وكولومبيا، من بين مجموعة تنافسية ضمت 125 طلبًا من مختلف أنحاء العالم.

سافر رئيس مجلس إدارة سنبلة عاهد إزحيمان والمديرة التنفيذية شيرابي يامادا إلى مدينة جيونجو في كوريا الجنوبية لتسلّم هذا التكريم وتمثيل فلسطين على الساحة الدولية.

على مدى أكثر من ثلاثين عامًا، ما زالت سنبلة تدعم مئات المنتجات في الحفاظ على مهارات التطريز والحرف التقليدية، وتمكينهن.

This International Charity Day, we’re asking for your continued support.

Because of you, we’ve been able to get this far. So much of this work is carried by women and underrepresented groups who are preserving embroidery traditions passed down for generations, learning new skills to support their families, and showing up for their communities even in the hardest circumstances.

We still need your help covering transportation, sourcing materials, and keeping our producer groups operating. Even a small amount will make a difference.

What began in 1950 as the Palestinian Needlework Program for refugee women in Surif became women-run in 1979, and was reborn as Surif Women’s Cooperative in 1983. Since then, the women have built a distinct style all their own.

Instead of the popular eitamin cross-stitch canvas, they work on cream-colored mansouri cotton, a fabric that gives their embroidery its soft, warm base. Every pattern is created by counting threads by hand, a technique that produces the same striking precision on both sides of the fabric.

Their designs are adapted from the Palestinian dresses, carrying the traditional motif of the donkey, the camel, the olive tree, and more, each one rooted in village life and passed down through generations.

‎بلشت سنة 1950 كبرنامج للتطريز الفلسطيني للاجئات في صوريف، وبسنة 1979 صارت نسوان القرية هني يلي بيديروها، وبسنة 1983 تأسست رسمياً تعاونية نسوان صوريف. من هيك وهني بنيّوا أسلوب مميز الهم لحالهم.

‎بدل قماش “الإيتامين” المعروف للتطريز، بيشتغلوا على قماش قطن “المنصوري” بلونه الكريمي، يعطي التطريز قاعدة دافية وناعمة. كل غرزة بتنعمل بطريقة عد الخيوط باليد، طريقة بتطلّع نفس الدقة والجمال من الوجهين.

‎تصاميمهم مستوحاة من الثوب الفلسطيني التقليدي، وكل قطعة بتحكي عن تراث منطقة مختلفة: الحمار، الجمل، شجرة الزيتون، وأشكال تانية كتير، كلها متجذرة بحياة القرية وموروثة جيل عن جيل.

This is Surif Women’s Cooperative, based in a hilly village between Bethlehem and Hebron. A cooperative built by refugee women over 70 years ago, still stitching on the same fabric, and the same technique that makes their work one of a kind.

Every one of these onesies is hand silk-screened by the beneficiaries at Oasis Workshop in Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, on garments sourced from one of the last surviving textile factories in Bethlehem.

Oasis gives adults with intellectual disabilities a place to work, create, and be an integral part of their community. Over the years, the program has grown to offer more ways for beneficiaries to do meaningful work, and hand silk-screening these onesies is one of them.

Every onesie you bring home helps keep this program running: daily transportation, wages, and a space where more than 32 beneficiaries get to do work they’re proud of.

كل Onesie من هدول مطبوع يدوياً بالطباعة الحريرية من المستفيدين بورشة الواحة (Oasis) بمدينة بيت ساحور، قريب من بيت لحم، على قماش من واحد من آخر مصانع النسيج المتبقية بمدينة بيت لحم.

ورشة الواحة بتعطي البالغين من ذوي الإعاقة الذهنية مساحة يشتغلوا فيها، يبدعوا، ويكونوا جزء أساسي من مجتمعهم. مع مرور السنين، البرنامج توسع وصار يقدّم طرق أكتر للمستفيدين يشتغلوا شغل ذو معنى، وطباعة هالـ Onesie هي وحدة منها.

كل Onesie بتشتروه بيساعدهم يحافظوا على استمرارية هالبرنامج: مواصلات يومية، أجور، ومساحة بتخلي اكتر ٣٢ مستفيد يعملوا شغل يفتخروا فيه.

Take a look inside Oasis Center مركز الواحة للأشخاص ذو الإعاقة / Oasis center in Beit Sahour, Palestine, where adults with intellectual disabilities find a place to work, create, and belong.

As we visited the center recently, we learned just how far the staff go for their beneficiaries. Sometimes the workers keep showing up and supporting the beneficiaries even without pay, when the workshop is struggling to cover it. The driver and social workers check in on beneficiaries daily, especially those who live alone without family nearby. And with transportation costs rising, some families have had to stop sending their loved ones altogether, even though it’s often the one place they truly belong.

Their services are free for every beneficiary, which is exactly why the center needs your help to keep going.

‎تعرّفوا على مركز الواحة في بيت ساحور، حيث يجد البالغون من ذوي الإعاقة الذهنية مكانًا للعمل والإبداع والانتماء.

‎خلال زيارتنا للمركز، اكتشفنا قديش الطاقم متفاني بخدمة المستفيدين، وأحيانًا الموظفين بيستمروا بدعم المستفيدين حتى بدون أجر، لما المركز بواجه صعوبات بتغطية التكاليف. كمان السائق والأخصائي الاجتماعي بيطمّنوا يوميًا على المستفيدين، وخاصة يلي عايشين لحالهم بدون عائلة قريبة منهم. ومع ارتفاع تكاليف المواصلات، اضطرت بعض العائلات توقف إرسال أبنائها للمركز، رغم إنها كثير مرات بتكون المكان الوحيد يلي بيحسّوا فيه بالانتماء
‎خدمات المركز مجانية لكل مستفيد، وهذا ما يجعلها بحاجة إلى الدعم لتستمر.

Today we honor the memory of Sliman Mansour, one of Palestine’s most celebrated artists, who passed away at 79.

Mansour lent his eye for pattern and symbol to Surif Women’s Cooperative, designing embroidery pieces hand-stitched by the women there on traditional mansouri cotton.

We’re proud that these designs live on through the hands of the women who continue to embroider them, providing income and a source of livelihood for them, just as they have for decades. His impact reaches far beyond his own art, into the everyday work and dignity of the women who carry his designs forward.

🕊️ Rest in peace, Suleiman Mansour.

اليوم منستذكر بحزن الفنان سليمان منصور، من أهم وأشهر الفنانين الفلسطينيين، اللي توفى عن عمر 79 سنة.

سليمان منصور وهب بصره للأنماط والرموز لتعاونية نساء صوريف، ورسم قطع تطريز طرزتها النساء هناك بإيديهن على القماش المنصوري التقليدي.

‎منفتخر إنو هالتصاميم لسا عايشة من خلال إيدين النساء اللي بيواظبوا على تطريزها، وبتوفرلهن دخل ومصدر رزق. تأثيره وصل لأبعد من فنه، لحياة وكرامة النساء اللي بيكملوا حمل تصاميمه كل يوم.
