LOCKDOWN THROWS TEACHER PLANS INTO DISARRAY
All across the country, teachers are pulling their hair out as they reconsider their plans for the rest of the year. This is an especially difficult time for Infant teachers who meticulously plan their themes in order to give their pupils a truly authentic learning experience through the medium of play.
However, with Level 5 restrictions, many teachers now have to recalibrate. We spoke to Aisling who had intended using the theme ‘At the Restaurant’ for the month of November.
“I had been planning this for so long - most of my friends consider me to be quite the connoisseur of fine food and I wanted to share my experience and expertise with the children. I particularly wanted my pupils to indulge in the epicurean delights that only a Michelin Star restaurant can offer. One of my close friends, a renowned chef, was going prepare a gastronomic feast for my class, eight courses in all. But now it looks like we’re going to have to settle for ‘At the Takeaway’. I just need to make up my mind whether it’ll be Chinese or Indian, or to just go for a Chipper”.
Another teacher spoke of how he had planned to do ‘At the Supetmarket’ but as a result of recent announcements he will be forced to close down some of the aisles, as they contain non-essential items such as toys and children’s clothing. ‘It looks like there may be lay-offs in the role play area, just not enough roles to go around.’
These latest restrictions will also throw into jeopardy many teachers’ plans for December. ‘The Toy Shop’ was always a popular theme in the run up to the Christmas season but many teachers are now opting for ‘Click and Collect’ instead. Some schools also fear that the popular summer theme, ‘At the Airport’ will also be grounded and are now considering ‘Loading the Car for a Staycation’.
However, as the uncertainty continues, Infant teachers are being advised to cut their losses and go with ‘At School’. With the help of dubious contact tracing and manipulated statistics, come hell or high water it looks like they’re going to be kept open at all costs.
