Portlaoise Men's Shed

Portlaoise Men's Shed Open Tuesday 11am - 4pm, Thursday 11am - 4pm @ Portlaoise Equestrian Centre, Timahoe Road beyond KWS. What is a Men’s Shed?

The Community Men’s Shed is an updated version of the shed in the backyard. If you looked inside one you could see anything! From a number of men restoring furniture to perhaps restoring bicycles for a local school, or maybe fixing lawn mowers. You might also see both young and older men learning new skills from each other and maybe also learning something about life from the men they are working

with and indeed the most important element the drinking of tea, the telling of stories and the development of friendships. Although were endeavour to have an open door policy on shed admission it may be necessary in particular situations to veto membership. Please consult our branch with regard to this.

Wishing all our families, friends and supporters a very merry Christmas and happy new year. From all of us at the shed.

A fantastic series of nature podcast episodes brought to us by Ricky Whelan Bio Diversity Officer at Offaly County Council and Niall Hatch of Birdwatch Ireland. This episode is all about the much loved and equally hated Pine Marten or Cat Crainn ( Tree Cat ) in which we get a lovely mention from Dr Denise O'Meara of SETU and Ricky for our den box builds at Abbeyleix Bog. Always delighted to get a mention of our collaborative work in the area of bio-diversity.

We were delighted to recently host a visiting group of students and lecturers from SETU currently working on their MSc in Organic and Biological Agriculture course on their way to Abbeyleix bog. We gave a talk on our involvement in bio diversity builds at Abbeyleix Bog and the many other sites we have worked on in the past and how small actions like our own can play into local and national bio diversity conservation actions.

Many thanks to John Geraghty (Agricultural Science), Cara Daly (Horticulture), and Yvonne Grace (Horticulture) and Denise O'Meara ( Molecular Biology) SETU for including us in the Agroforestry and Landscape Biodiversity module visit.

Clem Fallon of the Irish Cancer Society dropped in this morning with our Daffodil bench kit which we hope to start working on shortly.

The Daffodil Bench is a visual reminder that while cancer is all around us, there are people there to help and listen. The Daffodil Bench is a collaboration between The Irish Cancer Society, The Irish Men’s Sheds Association, Portlaoise Mens Shed, Laois County Council and Portlaoise Tidy Towns.
