Florida Democrat Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz ignited controversy this week, slamming the GOP-backed Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act as a ploy to suppress Democratic votes. In interviews on Forbes Newsroom and CNN, she argued the bill—which requires proof of U.S. citizenship for federal voter registration—isn’t about election integrity but “preventing people from voting for Democrats,” echoing long-standing claims of voter suppression. 

The House-passed SAVE Act aims to close loopholes allowing non-citizens to vote, mandating documents like birth certificates or passports during registration—measures supported by 8 in 10 Americans, per polls.   Critics like Wasserman Schultz label it “Jim Crow 2.0,” while Republicans counter it’s essential to combat fraud and secure elections.
