Probably the most commonly asked question to our depots over the last few months is “Why are your prices going up so much?”, so we wanted to give our customers a clearer view.

There are many articles in the press about the dramatic rise in prices of materials, with timber being one of them. There are a number of contributing factors here, including scarcity of materials due to a comparatively warm Scandinavian winter, BREXIT complications at ports and on to huge increases in the cost of shipping containers due to Covid-19 and the Suez Canal incident.

For instance the cost of shipping a 40ft container from Asia to Northern Europe soared from $1,500 (£1,061) in summer 2020 to more than $8,300 (£5,873) by May 2021.

Clearly this all has a huge impact on cost prices of materials. We work hard with our supply partners to minimise these impacts, but inevitably we are all subjected to them without alternatives.

Temporary closure of James Latham Depots and related business: COVID-19 update.

We have already begun implementing a phased process of temporary closures across our depots with the announcement of the closure of our Scotland depot on 25th March.

This process will continue with the temporary closure of Abbey Woods, Dresser Mouldings, Gateshead and Dudley on 1st April. Further temporary closures could follow and this is kept under constant review.

We still have demand from customers supporting the NHS, and also manufacturing customers who are being asked to use their capabilities to produce items to support essential services, but demand from our traditional customers has very significantly reduced. Throughout this period we will focus all our efforts on supporting essential services and within government guidelines to industry which are continually being updated.
